Warbird Information Exchange

Picture taken on 10/31/2006. I have no idea what it is. Supposedly on a farm in NZ and is a Bristol 170 freighter.[img][img]http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t191/147thst/Borneopicture.jpg[/img][/img]

Maybe I'm wrong, but that looks like a British Rondell. Maybe it's a Beaufort. Then again, looking at the tail section it looks like the fuselage supported a double tail (like a Lodestar, but obviously not one).

Hmm... Googling around I figure it might be an Armstrong-Whitworth Albemarle tail section. Then again, probably not because of the lack of those strange window things in the tail section.



Is that a turret I see at the front of the section?

Anyone else?

I can't see the picture, but I VERY much doubt that it's a (long extinct) Albemarle. Most likely to be a Bristol Freighter, as stated, a number of which served with the RNZAF (unlike Beauforts)

I can't see the picture, but there is a Bristol B.170 freighter fuse (ex.RNZAF) sitting on a farm about an hour from where I'm sitting, we've got 5 or 6 of them, mostly complete, around the country.

I managed to see the picture while it was still up. It was in a line of about three pieces of fuselage (all not related to eachother). If I remember correctly, the sections were spaced about 20 feet apart or so. The section in question had a distinctly flat top to the fuselage and had what sort of looked like a turret hole nearer to the end that the centre section/wings would have been. Too bad the pictures not up anymore.

It definetly looked like it was on a farm. Obviously.

The centre section certainly looks like a Bristol Freighter.

So is it in NZ or Borneo (from the filename)?

It doesn't look like a Caribou to me (square windows, no sweep-up on the rear fuselage)

OK, looking at things.... it might be a:

Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer CCII


The fuselage shape looks right, and maybe, that fuselage section just behind it in the picture is the centre section of it... all in deep grass making it hard to figure out the actual shape of the pieces.

It could well be a Twin Pin, and they were used extensively in Malaysia (by both the RAF and later Malaysian AF) so that would tie in with the location.

A single RNZAF Bristol Freighter did crash in Malaysia, but seems to have been totally destroyed; this seems too intact to be the remains of that one.

I think the location is Waiuku NZ. I also have a photo of a complete looking fuselage but it is saved as an MHT and i don't know how to convert it.

Definitely not a Bristol Freighter. The BF has elevators which mount on the sides of the fuselage. I think that it is almost certainly a twin pioneer, as stated earlier. Look at the shape, and placement of the fuselage windows in the middle piece of wreckage... they are identical to the twin pin photo. The general shape of the fuselage fits too. If you look at the placement of the roundel it ties in perfectly as well. There is part of a serial number on the fuse... 94? Does that tie in with any known antipodean twin pins?

The a/c remains pictured in Peter-Four-Ohs post is definately NOT the Waiuku Freighter, the background is definately not the Awhitu peninsula where that fuse is located, the remains are too small to be a freighter, the roundel is wrong and the 94 does not fit into the markings for an RNZAF Freighter (NZ5901 - NZ5913). NZ5901 crashed in Malaysia as previously mentioned, it flew into a mountain side in the Cameron Highlands so I think the remains are too complete to be that aircraft.
