Here's a cool pic I found of Carol Landis on skylighters...

Anyone else have any cool USO photos?

Waiting patiently for Jack to pull out the Carole Landis photos from her visit to the 44th Fighter Squadron :)

Seems like she married a 38 pilot. There are photos of her visiting lots of 38 groups that I've seen.

Here's a cool one with Bob Hope and Francis Langford. Checkertail Clan maybe?

Sorry Boys...No Bob Hope, nor any female entertainers in Joe E Brown's USO troop as he performed for the Marines at Zamboanga, Mindanao on April 16, 1945.

However, he did get a ride in a warbird the next day.

On April 17, VMB-611 particapated in the landings to capture Malabang and its airfield. Lt. Col Sarles observed the landing from above, accompanied by the famous comic. Dispite his broad grin and jokes, Joe E was in deep sorrow over the death of his son who had recently been killed in the Pacific fighting.

Notice the "Hollywood" type next to Joe E Brown. His identity or function was not defined with this photo.

Yes... that's Col. Robert Baseler, CO of the 325th FG with them. Here's a closer look...

And a closer look at Carole Landis and that 90th BG B-24...

Carole Landis was traveling as part of the Jack Benny troupe when that photo was taken. Here's the front end of the B-24 she's standing next to, named after a recurring skit on Jack's radio program. (it was also made into a full-length feature film)

This shot was from the same USO tour. From left to right: Larry Adler, Martha Tilton, Carole Landis, Jack Benny and June Bruner.

I'm looking for a good scan of this photo or any others showing this aircraft.

What is that on the nose of the B-25 at the top of the picture? A Radar?

Yeah, there's been alot of pics popping up with the radar on the PBJ here recently, huh.

Sigh. I *heart* Carole Landis. What a shame how she ended up...

Awesome pics Steve!

For Gary... 8)

Sorry Django, most all my photos are of VMB-611's PBJs with the "Hose Nose" radar...I sadly lack photos of their PBJ-1J's. However, I also have some of VMB-423 PBJs without the "Hose Nose."

Not complaining Dave. I never even knew such a thing (or variants) existed until you guys joined up.

Now then... who's got some more Francis Langford pics...

You can say that again...

A shame indeed...

Carole Landis is one of my favorite wartime USO gals, but I also kinda like Patty Thomas. These next couple of photos are from the Patty Thomas collection in the Voices of War section of the Library of Congress website. You can see larger versions of these and many more images there, as well as a video interview with the lady herself. It's fairly long but definitely worth a looksee and a listen...

excellent thread. no pics to post, but my dad came off an infantry patrol into a bob hope show on morotai or mindanoa, he was quite surprised, & his company were definetely the worst dressed coming out of the jungle.
