go to the british movies section.

is it just me or do the 40's movie stars seem far better looking than those we have now?

That is sad, and she was very pretty.

For the most part I'd say yeah... although fashion has a lot to do with it, and the idea is relative to begin with. There are plenty of really nice looking gals in the entertainment world these days, but the makeup and clothes they wear sometimes make them look absolutely blah... to me anyway.

Looking at Christina Aguilera as an example... when she first came on the scene she was a real doll. Kinda plain-jane by many folks' standards, but a very nice looking girl. Over time I found her to be less and less attractive because of the wild makeup and clothes and the like. Some folks nowadays like that stuff... not me. Anyhoo, now that she's got the 40s thing goin' on, she obviously looks completely different. I think it's a bit over the top in some instances, but she was dynamite in that Candyman video...

Alrighty, here's some more of Carole Landis... I think these all came from THIS site, but it's been so long that I don't remember...

Here's a couple more shots from the PTO tour with Jack Benny, Larry Adler, Martha Tilton and June Bruner... looks like a C-87 in this first shot...

This is probably the most touching image I've seen of the lady...

I have to agree that female movie stars were better back then. I also like the way women dressed back in that time period. I am not a fan of alot of the girl magazine type that look like they are think enough to shine a light through. I like girls with curves. And that was fine in the 40's. Jessica Simpson is the closest I can think of to a 40's style star. She is always dressed nice, very polite, and not all skin and bones.

i was thinking about it and peter i think you picked one of the reasons.

to me the other is they seem to have class. i'm sure most of them were wild and "not the sort of girl you would take home to meet your mother" but you can't imagine them getting arrested for shoplifting, flashing thier crotches for the cameras, cruising out of clubs obviously wasted but not drunk, having public bitch fights etc.
i'm not saying they were classy but they kept up the appearance of being so.

There's a photo album on display at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo with some pics of Mickey Rooney visiting a P-61 unit somewhere in the ETO. They really need to scan those pics and archive them (of course, the museum probably has thousands of pics in the archives, and it would take years to scan them all!)

Wow, this thread has really taken off in a fantastic direction! I had heard of Carole Landis, but not seen pics... she was a bonafide friggin' KNOCKOUT. And her suicide... what a terrible travesty.

I need to see if I can get a printed copy of that pic of Patty Thomas in the P-38... :)

Thanks for the pics and info, guys!

Lynn

Excellent point! Keep in mind that this was during the "heyday" of the big studio era. The perfomers were basically "owned" by the studio. The studio controlled (for the most part) how they looked, where they were "seen", what movies they'd appear in, etc...... They had certain images to uphold - as part of their studio contracts! - and in turn, the studio would try to run damage control in the event a perfomer got a bit out of hand.....

The "appearance" of being classy, I'm sure at times WAS just an appearance, but as a female who grew up during the 70s & 80s, I will say honestly that it was the "glamour girls" of the 40s who were my idols, not the Farrahs, Cheryls or Christies of my "youth" --

I pity the young girls now for the current batch of "idols" they have to choose from! UGH! I haven't seen a bit of class from any of them, real OR contrived!

Just my two-cents.......

It is sad to think that quite a few of the early movie stars ended up in such tragic situations, some made it, but for the most part, the majority have pretty troubled lives.

Has anyone ever heard of Francis Farmer? Nirvana made a song about her. Very sad.

huh?

I watched Moon Over Miami this weekend. I highly recommend it. How can you go wrong with Betty Grable AND Carole Landis?
