warbirdcrew wrote:The rondels on there are Canada, Australia, Netherlands, and Britain. Secondly all of the rondels are from countries that flew the Sea Fury at some point. The overall blue scheme was worn by Dutch Sea Furies (Kon Marine), and the owner just replaced some of the Dutch rondels with those from other countries that flew the Sea Fury. If you like, look it up in Squaron Signal's book on the Sea Fury, there are some good references in there. I think the paint scheme is actually one of the better ones on a Sea Fury these days.
Good answer, and just a gloss that the Royal Australian Navy had a display team with dark blue overall Sea Furies as well as the Dutch scheme, and I think the Kon Marine scheme was actually dark grey upper surfaces, as used in the RCN and RN FAA in the earlier period of use. I'm not sure which (or either) the blue is representing, but neither of the originals had a car-like metallic paint as this one does. Oh, and I think they're roundels, but I confess to not knowing what the Dutch for them is.
Cheers

JDK-
You could very well be right about an Australian Sea Fury display team. I wasn't able to find anything about it on the internet and I am out of town till next week so I won't be able to look it up. About the Kon Marine scheme, I believe you are referring to this scheme:
which was used at one point.
I was referring to this scheme used by 860 squadron on their Sea Furies:
While I do like the color of Mr. Bradshaw's airplane, I do think it would be better without the metallic flake.

ps- I'm pretty sure you got me on the roundels
Also, neither of these are my own pictures, they were taken of the website of the Royal Dutch Navy (Kon Marine)

Hi JDK and others, the RAN only used the blue on two Furies 114 &115 which flew in a duo aerobatic team. One of these was replicated when the 3rd Sea Fury was rebuilt here in Darwin as 115/VH-HFX for Bruce Andrews. After some time in Aust it went to OFMC as G-BTTA and wore Dutch markings with the overal blue which also looks fantastic. From memory the blue we used as a colourmatch for the original was an Alfa Romeo colour!!I believe 115 is now in Sth Africa with John Sayers in a RN scheme, would love to see a pic of it if anyone has one.Cheers,Pete

Is there any evidence to back up the fact that this is blue? It looks like the standard FAA Extra Dark Sea Grey / White scheme to me - the aircraft in the picture certainly has light-coloured undersides.

Hi Bill,

I was actually referring to the low demarcation line scheme (second pic) which was a set of greys, and used (with variations) in the early period by RN and RCN, and the Dutch. I agree with Mike that secod pic's almost certainly Navy greys, rather than blues - either way, it's certainly not
overall dark anything!
This is the RAN blue scheme.

As I understand it, the owner allowed his DA (Display Authorisation) to lapse some years ago now. It appeared in the static at Duxford's Flying Legends and at RIAT a few years back, but has been up for sale for quite a number of years now - a recent rumoured sale to a new owner in France seems to have fallen through.
Good to see the owner keeping it 'exercised' on a regular basis.

Hi, Bill, I'm easily pleased. Large denominations always work.
I'm just not familiar with a Dutch blue scheme - there may be one, but a quick check hasn't thrown it up, be pleased if you can confirm or deny, or provide a cash alternative.

There's no sweat though.

Ex-G-BTTA used to fly like this:
As for markings, if you look on these pages, there is some info on the Dutch schemes worn by Navy Sea Furies.
http://www.dutchprofile.nl/profile.php?id=1
http://www.dutchprofile.nl/profile.php?id=1&bid=1
On both pages the text starts in Dutch, but there is an English translation halfway down the page. The summary is that there were two schemes, both dark grey over sky with the difference being in the height of the demarcation line on the fuselage. In scheme 1 (patroon 1) the line was at the bottom of the fuselage as in the shot posted by warbirdcrew.

Every Dutch guy I know just calls them roundels, but the 'official' Dutch word is 'Rozetten' or if you are into ye olde English... sorry Dutch: 'Kokardes'.

Thanks Archer,
And that might be our answer. If I recall correctly, it's a OFMC 'quickie' repaint putting Dutch
Kokardes ~hem~ over the RAN Roo roundels - not, in any way, and accurate scheme.
Nice though, albeit I preferred the Roos - but I would, wouldn't I?

As its not trying to be an accurate represenation of any particular period scheme it hardly matters whether or not its a metallic finish.
