Getting frustrated

Fri May 04, 2007 2:23 pm

Got to fly Wednesday. High winds canceled Monday's adventure.
My instructor is on vacation 'til next Thursday so I don't have anything scheduled. The head instructor said to call him on Monday and he'd see if his schedule was open and he'd fly with me. Did some more crosswind landings. Well...not too "crosswind". The wind was only about 20 degrees off the runway but about 9k. Still not as good as I need to be on them. Did more emergency procedures. Getting pretty good at that. Did an emergency descent on Wednesday. Kinda fun. S turns at 120k. Started at 5,000 and pulled out at 2,000 in about 1 minute.
ALMOST got into the airspeed indicator into the yellow.
If he doesn't let me solo pretty soon I'm gonna' be really pissed. I know I can do it and HE knows I can do it, so I don't know what the hold-up is.

Mudge the frustrated

Hang in there mudge! :D

Like Taylor said - Hang in there. I got to 40 hours before my instructor let me solo! I think I could've done it earlier, too.

Hang in there Mudge and take it easy. Your instructor will be having you solo before you know it. These things do take time so don't try and rush it. Sounds like your instructor just wants to make sure you are good & ready to solo, thats all. All you can do is keep up the good work and keep learning! :D

Oh grasshopper... When you can snatch a good landing from the crosswind it will be time for you to solo! 8)

But seriously, patience. Once you have solo'd then the door is open for any number of opportunities to be "humbled"!
Voice of experience speaking here!

The very next flight after my solo I did two great landings then reverted back to coming in hot.
What do you think happened?

OK, I know the suspense is killing you... I bounced about 8 ft. because the plane wasn't ready to quit flying, then I dropped in hard enough to set the ELT off! The ONLY thing I did right was keep the nose up (for 20 extra brownie points WHAT should I have done Airman Mudge?)
The nose wheel was shimmying and my T&G turned into a full stop. I had one of those Oh criminey moments, because I thought I had broken something! Fortunately Cessna built them tough and I didn't have to buy anything before the plane could fly again!

Anyhow, you will get there!

which is why..

Set it down a little hot eh?

Yes.. and this is why instructors want a good day, with a good
feelilng and confidence abounding before they let you go do it
by yourself for the first time.. Just like the kids we all were,
when we think we're ready.. maybe we are, maybe not..
but it comes down to risk.. they want this to be a sure thing
since the downside is that if something goes wrong, and
sometimes murphy's law ( if something can go wrong, it will!)
comes to visit, then the paperwork, the 2nd guessing is really
a incredibly trying experience for everyone involved, - not only
for you - since if its bad enough you may not ever want to try
it again (and you're so close..!) and for the instructor, for whom
everyone will 2nd guess him.. from his boss, to the insurance
company to your family and even the instructor themself.
And they don't want to lose you as a student either - cashflow
or worse!

Its an incredible feeling to go up by yourself the first time, not
just because you've earned it, but because the nervousness of not
having someone next to you is different. Right down to the point
that the airplane has less weight in it and WILL feel different.
This can make the best candidate do something different, or weird.

Soloing in todays world of lawyers and insurance takes longer than
in the past just to cover everyones butt. It wasn't always that way,
but reality stinks sometimes.

So hang in there mudge, we're really cheering for you! You'll get
there..

40 Hrs? I would check to see if your Instructors aren't late on their boat payments.

Co,bination of having to fly 20 minutes to the practice area, a new and I think nervous instructor, the effects (on me) of a crash I saw just as I was starting my lessons, and my own mistakes. Thankfully I was tenacious... and it's paid off.

solo

Hang in there mudge, dont worry about how much more time before solo.In the big scheme of things it aint gonna matter. If you get the opportunity, learn tail draggers, the training wheel is on the proper end.Think citabria.

Henning...I have 26.6 hours and 36 landings.
Spanner...I have to guess but if I were coming in THAT hot, I'd have to go around and try again. What's the old saying? "Better to go around and SHOW people you can't land, than to dump it and PROVE you can't."
Youse troops are the greatest. I get down and you pick me up.

Mudge the virtuous

ps. Virtuous...patience....think about it. It'll come to you.

(Man...I love it when I'm so subtle I have to 'splain 'em. )

Don't feel bad...

Hey there mudge!

Don't feel down.. you're doing great.. your postings are reminding
me of all the similar emotions and experiences that I and others went
through and you'll get this all down and experience the same feelings
of pure joy when its your turn!

Just for another point of reference.. I had 22 hrs to solo.. but it had 67
landings when they first let me go by myself. This was at a towered
field as home base but we spent alot of time flying small fields as well
as in the KUES pattern. Unfortunately I was just about to solo when
9/11 gave me an month off from my flying habit and I needed a couple
lessons to get back in the game again. weather can have alot to do
with it as well.

Your time is coming! Just keep at it and you'll get there soon, just
remember to enjoy the journey!

Right you are!
I should have gone around.
Fly it by the numbers and keep your head on a swivel and odds are you will be OK! :D

Hello Mudge,

I echo everyone else when they say to be patient. It's definitely worth the wait.

In case I missed it before, what kind of plane are you flying?
