Well, this isn't "the" CAF Zero. That aircraft is now at Pearl Harbor on static display. This aircraft is the ex-Planes of Fame aircraft.

edit- the post below is more correct. I forgot that the plane was technically the Museum of Flying's and was on loan to the Planes of Fame in the late '90s.

Wrong my friend. This is the CAF Zero. We had two. One was sold to the museam in Pearl the other was purchased from Dave Price and that is the one we currently fly. All confusion could have been avoided by clicking on our wonderful website.

First, there was no confusion. I was born and raised in Lancaster, TX, the A6M3 is not "the" CAF Zero, it's the "new" CAF Zero. The A6M2 was "the" Zero and is the one that everyone saw for 20 years flying in airshows around the US, this one is the replacement for it after the original got to corroded. I know the difference, I spent plenty of time around it when I was a kid and that plane was hangared here.

You know I’m laughing so hard it’s hard to type this. You must forgive me for my mistake. Since I have worked on “THE CAF ZERO” as well as “THE NEW CAF ZERO” and have the occasion to run into Steve Hinton flying the “CHINO ZERO” I in my advanced age can get confused. At the next staff meeting I am going to suggest that to eliminate all confusion we replace our air show signage to reflect your astute observations.

Best,

Dan

Gosh I’m sorry John if I gave that impression. I am just trying to share the fun that I get to experience in the CAF. Sharing is what it is all about. I know that there are thousands of people who would love to do what I do but can’t. That’s the big picture. Arguing about minutiae is not what I’m here for.

Dan

NX712Z (X-133) is the former David Price A6M3 now CAF Zero based in Camarillo.

N58245 (EII-102) was the traditional CAF A6M2 Zero built up originally by Bob Diemert and is now on static display in Hawaii at the Pacific Aviation Museum.

NX46770 (61-120) is the Planes of Fame A6M5.

I am not aware of a Zero having been on loan to Planes of Fame. Some of the Russian built ones have been assembled and licensed by Fighter Rebuilders on the site of Planes of Fame however.

N652Z (HK-102) was a static display aircraft that Planes of Fame once owned. Despite the N-number it was never close to airworthy (wings cut off and bolted back on for display, etc.). Now owned by Vulcan Warbirds.
