McQuire AFB P-38 and Open House

Visited McGuire AFB today for their open house.
Drove right past the P-38 on the pole at the main gate.
After last week, security being what it is at Fort Dix and McGuire,
I couldn't stop and get out.
Upon leaving I took a couple pics while driving. Not the best but at least
I didn't run into anything while looking thru the camera.

I hate seeing that P-38 outside, but at least they keep it up well and have taken it off the pole to refurbish it occassionally.

I made it down there on saturday, was cloudy in the morning but then it cleared up and was really nice. Found out that Memphis Belle was waiting in willow grove to go to this airshow as it was at the one end of the ramp (posted a question about it earlier in the week). Nice show, I really liked the Superhornet demo and the F-4.

Was Memphis Belle there? It flew over my house last Sunday on its way back to Geneseo. I knew she was at an airshow, but I forgot which one it was.

One would have imagined that in the year 2007 a fibreglass replica would have replaced the 38 on the pole.

With the rarity of P-38s today, I'm amazed that this airframe is still sitting out in the weather as a gate guard, even if it is well taken care of. I agree that this pole would be the ideal spot for a fiberglass replica. They should give this bird the shelter, respect and care that it deserves.

I'm in total agreement!
I'd love to see the P-38, along with the FG-1D Corsair in Connecticut come down out of the cold and be replaced by fiberglass replicas.

I drive over to McGuire AFB each month for a Haircut at the PX. I've never seen that P-38!!
