Awesome pictures as always Jack. Thanks for sharng. I love Corsairs!

Do you have any idea what the story is behind the painted out national insignia on the Pt. Mugu F4U-1A during wartime? I know it was a requirement when they were sold surplus after the war, but I can't remember seeing it done during the war.

Thanks,

Steve

That's a war weary coming back to be rerurbished and using for training.
Quite a few of the VF-17 Jolly Roger Corsairs came back this way also including blackburn's "Big Hog".

In the second to last pic down in the hangar, what is hanging (the things with the insignia on it) in the netting above the plane?

Good question, I would guess an extra pair for outer wings.

As always Jack, very nice pictures indeed.

I've always been a big fan of the "Corsair II".

If you ever come across any VMA-332 during Korea (USS BAIROKO, (CVE-115) July 1953) with the White and Red poka-dot band around the cowl please post them up.

Thanks

Shay

Could also be a pair of "salvaged" wings.

Excellent stuff as always Jack. 8) You really suprise me with a lot of these shots. I think that "USMC" logo nose art would make a superb addition to an airworthy FG-1D. It's rare enough to find nose art at all on a Corsair, much less something that attractive IMO.

That's the Sea Bee insignia
I've got a number of nose art shots in the images I was able to salvage.
I've got around 50 F4U photos in 4 x 6s if anyone wants them make a offer. There awesome pictures BTW 8)
