Of course I don't think you're irrelevant dad, after all I can't fly the spit solo yet, so you're good for SOMETHING.

Also, I don't really think of myself as a "gun nut" but if I ever had large quantities of money I was trying to find a way to spend, I'd love to get the proper licenses to have the Spit fully armed with working guns. You know, just for hunting, and personal protection and stuff.

David and you guys, I got a good laugh out of the thought of the plane being fully armed. As I kid I owned and used guns, pellet guns, 22s shotguns. My Dad was a bird hunter, my older Brother Jimmy was an avid hunter, he would always prefer to be out in the fields or on the golf course rather than in class. I sort of got my fill of killing birds after a dove hunt in Mexico which was more like sitting in the Alamo and waiting for the targets to come in range. I never hunted big game, I just don't look at a beautiful deer or elk and think they would look better dead. Maybe I am a liitle off center on that, as I don't mind looking at them on my plate at a local gourmet restaurant. Unlike in my youth, kids and nuts are now shooting up schools, and to me guns have come to represent so much murder war and violence. Anyway back to the Spit guns. The closest I have come is in firing the 30 cal on the half track with blanks at Breckenridge. I understand the also have a 50 and a 20mm, but the smaller one was loud enough for me.

Bill...not to get off the thrust of the thread, but...as far as hunting goes, I have no desire to kill anything that's not trying to kill me. My shooting is limited to mostly long range target (500+ yds.).

While I will never fire another weapon, I sure do miss hunting. It's not just the idea of killing what I eat, myself, or the fact that I think we have lost a very important connection to nature by mass producing meat--which prevents us seeing the cost of what we do. I miss waking up before light, freezing my toes off, drinking hot coffee and trying to stay awake ina duck blind while I listen to the wind blow over the marsh. Mind, I could have that without killing ducks and deer. But I could also beat myself about the head and neck with a hammer, and it still wouldn't produce the same effect.

Not sure the A-10 cannon would stop it, for an instant, in flight. I kinda' doubt it. I have heard that in WWII that was true of the B-25s that had the 105mm howitzer mounted in the nose. Strictly from memory and remember...I'm old.

I read in Trade a plane today that the B-25 "Barbie III" is for sale. I believe it is an H model with the gun nose including the 75mm( or whatever caliber) cannon in the nose. Now's your chance to see if you can reverse a B-25 ala F-22 Raptor.

I've heard the "large cannon stops 'plane" story related to just about every aircraft that had a big gun fitted. AFAIK, and I've looked, and talked to some aircraft armament experts, there's no evidence that this ever happens.

Certainly the recoil can cause problems to the airframe structure, but that's a different issue.

I believe it relates to one of those quirks of human nature; big gun fitted to aircraft, some one says 'Gee, that'll stop it in the air'; then someone else hears that and says 'I've heard that the big gun stops the airplane in the air'. - Because we all want to believe... Especially over the mass aspect of Newton's third law.

Anyone got any solid evidence? (And please, no 'and here's another story', but solid data supported fact.)

As to 'armed civilian Spitfires', Spitfire G-FIRE was fitted with strobe lighting when flying in air displays in the UK in the 1980s and1990s. Looked vaguely interesting, but was basically unimpressive. Killing the audience is generally regarded as a no-no in showbiz.

That would be impossible. Think of the G load going from cruise to zero in a fraction of a second. That's a huge G load on pilot and airplane. And then the airplane suddenly accelerates back to flying speed or else falls out of the sky from the 'instant stall'. What are you guys going to believe next: Mustangdriver with secret knowledge of a flyable SR-71???
