Back Issues of Aviation Magazines

Mon May 24, 2004 4:58 pm

For marketing research reason I was just wondering if people were interested in this concept. Officially licensed of course. It would make seaching easier. I don't even know if it will be possible, but figured I check interest before pursueing this idea and approaching the companies involved.
(And I'm not talking about illegal or pirated copies, but a professional produced & LEGAL product.)

BTW, voting is anonymous, so feel free to let your opinion be known.

Oh, I don't know. Air Classics, Sport Aviation, Kitplanes, Warbirds International, EAA Warbirds...

I'm not thinking about a particular one, but something like Warbirds Worldwide, Flypast, Air Classics, those type. Ones that have a huge amount of back issues are especially suitable I would think. I'm just curious if there is interest. Its something I would like, would make storage and searching so much easier. And since the days of $1 a mag on e-bay are for the most part gone its something I wish someone would do.

EAA put the entire series of Sport Aviation and its predecessors on CD a few years ago. I think that was an excellent idea. I bought it, browsed it once when I got it, and have not referred to it since. :(

You mean I can sell them for more than $1 a mag? Maybe I should put all my old mags on eBay. Should only take me about 5 years to get them all sold off... :?

I floated the idea of doing this with Warbirds Worldwide a while back. I even made some arrangements for financing. I got the impression that it wasn't well recieved. I don't know if there are still money issues and stuff like that that have to do with the closing of the magazine or what, but none of the people I talked to that were involved with WW seemed to think it would fly.

I have the Sport Aviation collection on CD. They take up alot less space than fifty years of back issues do. Plus, I take them on the C-17 with me and browse through them on my laptop. I hope the EAA does the same thing with Warbirds and their other magazines.

I'd love to see the same thing done with Air Classics and Warbirds International. Just in case you are wondering, 40 years of Air Classics makes a stack just about six feet high.

Heh, thats what sort of prompted the idea, I have about 4.5 feet of air classics

I think it's a fantastic idea. I could get rid of about three filing cabinets too. I could even sell my old issues to raise the money for the new DVDs!

I have often thought about this ..but mainly for unavailable back issues , otherwise I think I prefer sitting on the couch and flicking through the real thing , rather than staring at a computer screen ... maybe I am a bit old fashioned ;-)

Ex Asst Ed of Warbirds Worldwide here. It's a great idea on the surface, but there are some fundimental problems, starting with copyright. ALL contributors to the magazine in question (let's say WW) would have a right to be contacted and an oportunity to ask for royalties. 30 plus photographers, 20 plus authors etc some of whom are dead, some of whom have moved... Arghhh.

The exception seems to be association journals where the assoc has primary copyright and can do what the EAA has done.

In short it's an attractive idea, but I think DaveM2 and bdk have a point, though Brad's access while flying is interesting. "Hey folks, did you know..."

Changing tack, what about an index offer for fave mags? That's the tough area...

Cheers

While I'd certainly rather have a full-on archive of Warbirds Worldwide at my pdf beck-and-call, I'd almost settle for a detailed index -- but not for 20 bucks!!

Now I've never heard of anyone getting royalties from a magazine article, and most are published, without the actual plane owner making a dime, just publicity (and that's usually all they want, and some don't). So why would it be a problem on a CD? Are these same people going to front the money to make this CD happen, I don't think so.

I look forward to the days when I can thin my magazine collections down to PDF's on a CD, as I too spent close to $175 for my EAA collection and update on CD, and the saved s-pace is well worth it...............Roger
