He could have chased the enemy until he ran out of gas. That took place a good bit out there.

No, it was staged. Thompson got cleaned up and cooled off and had his picture taken later that day.
I've got a bunch more of the 45th FS P-40Ns on Baker Island. Note that the stencils were taped over
before the sand was applied to the upper surfaces.
