COMP-USA is closing its doors

Mon Jan 28, 2008 8:27 pm

At least, in the Houston area they are.

Last Friday, I found by accident that CompUsa is shutting down its stores in Houston.

Lots of stuff that I don't need, at prices of up to 40% off.

They are selling shelving, furniture and fixtures, too. One single item I bought, is an acrylic cube, that I will use to display my Corsair gunsight.

There were many people looking around, not too many people buying.

Saludos,

Tulio

The one near me is also shutting down (Franklin, TN that is). I took a fast look but it looked pretty well picked over

They are closing all of their retail stores, but keeping thier catalog and internet sales side.

They're all done. Stick a fork in them. Every location that hasn't already locked the doors (the one nearest me closed during their last round of store closings) should be done by June-July.

I'm a bit sad to see them go. The stores had decent gear, but they just couldn't compete with the Newgg, Tigerdirect, and the random store in West Turdlick, IA that was listing some new gear on eBay. I loved going in there to shop instead of the car stereo & surround sound blasting places like Best Buy and Circuit city

The other thing that really helped them was having people on the floor that really knew what they were talking about. You could go in and get questions answered that were well beyond what you could glean off of the box or product sheets. Once they were bought out and it made known that they would be shedding retail locations, it seemed like all the floor people with any knowledge left for other jobs. Last time I was in one and asked something more than what was on the box, I got the "deer in the headlights" look from the guy. I was fortunate that the Apple rep was about two steps away and had just finished with someone else and was able to answer my question.

Once the word was out too, they suffered from ever decreasing stock levels and selections. By the time the nearest store to me closed, the Apple software section took up less than two shelves on a 4' gondola display. It had taken up almost 30 complete gondolas before.

After being lied to by store management at two different BestBuys during Christmas, I will never buy from them again. I can look past unintentionally giving out bad information, but when it was intentional and worse, planned, there is no way.

Glad to see them go. Their prices were terrible and their sales people would ignore you. I went in there before Christmas to check out their "everything must go before Christmas sale" and most stuff was marked 5% off...5%! I shouldn't have wasted the gas. Other shoppers were getting pissed (not to mention they had obviously marked their tv's up). Awful...

I hated going into CompUSA and have to agree with Scott; that was always my experience as well.

Goodbye, Good Riddance!

I bought my first store purchased computer, from COMPUSA back in 1997.

Through the years, I found that visiting the store was always a lesson in patience. One guy I met there, who really knew his stuff about computers. The rest, were basically winging it, hoping that I would be dazzled by their b.s and buy the product so that they would earn their commission for the sale.

Upon asking more pointed questios, they almost never had the right answer.

Around 1999 - 2000 I thought that this company could not last much longer, given their business model; they were always pushing the extended warranties, even when I specifically requested that they did not.

So, I stopped buying from them.

Later, when they brought T.V.s and stereos to their store, I knew that the store was doomed. What surprises me, is that they managed to last this long.

There were a couple of web-sites from their employees, where they complained about all the behind the scenes doings of management.

So, I agree 100%, good riddance!

Now, if only Circuit City could follow the same path . . . they fired all of their old employees, so that they would not have to pay them higher salaries, and replaced them with lower waged people. I know it is common business practice in a capitalist economy, but still, their lack of respect for their employees, has meant that I do not conduct any business with them.

End of rant. : )

Saudos,

Tulio
