I see the museum has an F4 being restored to fly. Is that possible? I thought it took Collings Foundation an act of congress to get theirs in the air.

The act of congress that "gave" The Collings Foundation our F-4 just required the Air Force to give us a non-demilled airframe, and all of the parts and pieces needed to make it fly. The Air Force was not required to make is fly before giving it to us, we had to pay for that. There have been a couple of non-demilled airframes that have made it out of inventory before the regulations for the scrap dealers were changed. There were a lot of airframes that were put out on loan to museums that were not demilled, but are still property of the US Air Force and US Navy that can not be flown. If the Wings and Rotors Museum was able to track down one of the few airframes that are civilian property and not demilled, then there is a chance that they could return it to the air. Hopefully it is a fairly complete airframe because there are lots of components that are very difficult to impossible to find on the civilian market. The ones that you can find are very expensive.

The Phantom II that is under restoration by this outfit is actually an F4H-1, which is an extremely early variant. I believe that this aircraft has been under restoration for some time, as I remember a notice on it about 10 years ago. It is actually the 11th pre-production aircraft, which makes it even rarer, and probably doubly difficult to restore due to many parts probably unique to the variant. Would be awesome to see returned to the air though!
