Help pick the new paint scheme for Mustangpilot's Corsair!

There's a ton of great paint schemes out there. My number one pick would be F4U-1A "Ring-Dang-Doo" BuNo:50033 with VMF-217 in Sept 1944. Great nose art.
some other ones I'd go with are a late war 1945 scheme, something off of VF-83 (checker type pattern), VF-85 (lightning bolts), or VMF-122 (arrows).

or go with something out there, like one on this model decal sheet from a headquarters squadron, HQSS-22. Also check out the VMF-511 plane on there, which is different.

do something unique!! a ww 2 new zealand paint / insignia scheme. i think the new zealanders would be most appreciative, & their wartime aviation contribution is horribly ignored anyway, not to mention the heads it will turned dressed up like this!! tom

I'll second all of Rob's suggestions. They are all quite good. Also, a nice, post war Naval Reserve scheme would make for a pleasant change. My favorite of the bunch, however, has always been DeLong's FG-1D. I'd always thought those markings would look particularly good on Kohs' aircraft, as it is alrerady half way there in its 'off the shelf' glossy sea blue factory-fresh delivery scheme. And DeLong was a Michigan native after all..... Jim

MKD1966- The only problem with that is, though as pretty as it looks, the colors are not correct. Aircraft that served with VMF-312 (the squadron represented by the Air Zoo FG) had white checks only, no red. Jim

I know, I wasn't going to get involved but another choice came to mind, VBF-86 of the USS WASP. I have good documantation after doing a TBM (VT-86) from that Carrier CV-18, 1945. Glossy Sea Blue with "X" on rudder/vertical and A/C number below. Top of right wing tip had a large "X" and on the bottom of the left wing. Squadron insignia on both sides below front wind screen and number on both sides of nose bowl. All numbers and "X"'s are insignia white. Then after the restoration do a formation photo shoot with the TBM and Corsair both in WASP markings. What ya' think?

How about polished bare metal with invasion stripes? What else would a "mustangpilot" be seen in?

Guys, you're missing the point.

We are in dyre need of a Corsair painted in VVS colours, everybody knows they had 5 regiments serving on the Vistula Front during 1945!

Good ideas everybody! Keep them coming! We need to see more pictures! I'd really like to see some of the Sand Point Corsairs.

I certainly like the suggestions of my good friend Jack Cook. (How long have we talked about this ??) I think the plane would be nice in the VBF-83 markings of Ed Schiess, mostly because of the Pacific Northwest connection. The Bunker Hill Markings have always been on top of my list. But it seems like I heard that the Cavanaugh Museum's Corsair is being painted in Archie Donahue's colors.

But, I think my favorite is still the USS Saidor markings. I can't find a picture on the internet, but I know I've seen it in a couple of books. I'm pretty sure it was the Detail and Scale book. I'd look but I'm in Hawaii and my books are in South Carolina. If anybody else can find this picture, please post it.

A VERY close second, actually about equal, choice is Donald Yoast's VMF-351 markings.

I guess I like the more colorful paint jobs!

Look through books and magazines, your old photo albums and find a paint scheme that needs to be represented. (I'd do it also, but I'm currently sitting in Japan)

Remember the ground rules:

1. American markings
2. glossy sea blue (no tri-color)
3. accurate for an FG1D(or any other 3-bladed version)
4. No skull and crossbones
5. A paint scheme that isn't currently in use.
6. One that has significance in the Pacific North West gets bonus points

The rules for the paint scheme have changed. Now we are also looking at airplanes with all varients of the tri-color scheme. Still not interested in anything with the skull and crossbones or a scheme that is currently represented on a Corsair.
