I know that there are some examples there that should come in, but there are some examples there that would have been scraped had the USAF not decided to preserve it at the base. Such as the larger types like the C-123 and C-54/C-118.

Great collection of airplanes. Some very exciting ones that I would prefer to see indoors.

But that being said, how are the weather conditions at Lakeland AFB? Is the climate fairly good for outdoor preservation? I'm ignorant of the area, so.... is it near the ocean where the planes would be effected by salt air?

But that being said, how are the weather conditions at Lakeland AFB? Is the climate fairly good for outdoor preservation? I'm ignorant of the area, so.... is it near the ocean where the planes would be effected by salt air?

To answer your Q David they are well away from salty ocean air but being that they are outside they get the normal heat including humidity, although not all that bad. rain every now and then mild winters with ocational snow.

My question is how did Ken get on base? Is he military? Does he have a friend(sponsor) on base? Or are they relaxing a bit to let "civies" on base to see the collection? I would love to and have wanted for several years to photograph those birds.

I'll be moving to Altus in a month. We'll take a road trip down to Lackland some weekend and I'll get you on base to look at whatever you want. I owe you for the Dr. Pepper's anyhow! Dyess has some nice stuff as well and there is probably still some nice stuff at Wichita Falls.

well taken care of birds!!! i salute the caretakers. i believe there are a row of f-105 thunderchiefs on a flight line that is used for military police / security training. i saw it posted here a few years ago. still their??

I think they said one of the those F-105's got placed in a museum. Not 100% sure. They do look very good considering that they are outside. I would love to see them moved indoors in the future. I like the fact that the replica P-38 is there. Looks great. The replica B-24 is really cool, but can use a little help in a few areas. Still not bad, and awesome that a replica that large is there.
