Thanks for the new photos! Reminds me about an unanswered question I had: What was the purpose of the other C-118 that was missing the vertical stabilizer and outer wing panels?

Air Force cops (I use that term very lightly)use them for training dogs and themselves in search techniques. The F-105s are used to teach them how to patrol the flightline.

I still fly in the Reserve, so base access is not a problem. I believe these photos were taken in April 2004. Many thanks to Jack for posting - I need to budget some time to sit down and get my own photo account. The recent discussion on the fiberglass B-24 really spurred me to get these pix out to the group.

Glad you guys enjoyed them.

I visited the Parade Ground at Lackland in 1993. After filling in a registration form I could walk around the base freely. I remember seeing aircraft everywhere. I took some slides, but not nearly enough as I had only a limited amount of film with me. The B-24 and the B-17 back then were the real stuff, not replicas. Annoyingly the roll of slides with, amongst others, those two aircraft on it got lost after I delivered it to my local photoshop.

Here is a pic of an F-89 wich was sitting in what seemed to be a parking lot. It had FV-434 painted near the tail.

I was able to see Lackland and Dyess before 911, they would let you on with a visitor's pass once you showed photo ID and proof of insurance. Both bases have really nice birds and well kept. I sure miss going to them and seeing the aircraft, but I guess that's the way post 911 is. Thanks for bringing back some nice thoughts from the past.

Nice pictures :D

I'd think the NMUSAF would at least want to bring the P-51H and F-82 inside, though, as they're not exactly commonplace. I know they've already got Betty Jo, but still :?

Technically, the birds at Lackland belong to the NMUSAF...

I was at Lackland in '61...they wouldn't let me out for 2 months. I had to go to Warner Robbins after that. Then on to the 497th RTS in Schierstein, Germany....now that was fun.

I was held prisoner at LAFB for 8 weeks back in October and November of 1960. It would have been nice to see a display such as the photos in this thread. The only airplane I got to see was the Braniff which flew me away from San Antonio.

Great pix! I have a stack of Polaroid (!) pix that I took when I was there in the fall of '81. Funny to look at the Polaroids now and see what I wrote on some of them (B-24 Mitchell !!!). I was one of the many who went through the Security Police/Law Enforcement Academy and do not remember the line of F-105s. I do remember getting to play in the woods at the lovely spa called Camp Bullis  That is where I remember seeing a lot of either T-28s or T-34s in different areas of the woods. I was more into playing the war games than looking at the planes then...sure wish I had taken some pix out there now.

I applaud the setting of example of REPLICAS. But I personally would like to see the windows a different color, like dark tint or something. Baby blue just doesnt' look right. Good pix anyway.

Too bad that whole row couldn't be made into a flyable team.

Nice how they've kept up the S. E. A. camo. Actually they look pretty good.

C-118/P-38/B-24

Okay guys had to update my profile for this one. I am a SA boy and dad used take me to Lackland AFB at least once a month for a parade grounds walk around.

1. Aircraft is a C-118 and NOT a C-54
2. P-38 is not really a Fiberglass replica it a restored semi full scale Lockheed wind tunnel test subject.
3. The B-24 was donated to the AFM by the American Air Museum at Duxford (I believe that is the correct name, please weigh in) to replace the actual B-24 taken from Lackland 2000ish and now on display inside out of the South Texas heat and humidity.
