Two more from the stack

Thu Oct 30, 2008 9:40 am

These were both taken by an Army Air Forces airman, touring a certain unnamed location. These two little photos turned up in my stack this morning. WITHOUT right clicking (you know who you cheaters are) can you ID where this is? Bonus points for getting the name right in both German and English.

That's easy, it's the Eagles Nest. Don't know the name in German though I'm afraid.

Dang, Django. Talk about ruining my fun! :) I guess it was too easy, huh? I was totally surprised to find this in the stack. Right tucked away in the midst of some blah, scenic views of Germany and Switzerland. Treasure in the midst of trash, I guess.

Berchtesgaden is the German town in Bavaria where the Kehlsteinhaus, or Eagle's Nest, is located. Located at an elev. of 1834 meters, Hitler only visited a few times because he was afraid of heights. The building was reached from the road below (124 m) by an elevator which some have claimed was gold-plated. The building and elevator are still in use today as a converted restaurant.

I visited it during one of my Army tours. Beautiful view from there. It is a restaurant now. Good food! Worth the trip if visiting Germany.

Spent a winters night there at the Platterhof Hotel, which has been torn down. Took a tour of the bunker system too.

The small buildingon the upper right picture, is the Kehlsteinhouse (Eagles Nest) that is accessable by an elevator located behind the doors of the pcture on the bottom left. The area is called Obersalzburg. Berchesgaden is the town located below in the valley.
