Hey FAFG -- any updates/photos of your friends' South African adventures as Amelia's Electra?

They had have a safe return trip to Europe (across the east africa this time.)
Some trouble to find avgas in some places.
They were back in France at the end of August.

The links and pictures are much appreciated. It looks as if they had quite an adventure indeed. I didn't realize until I saw the map what an epic journey these people undertook. The trip of a lifetime to be sure.

I think the recreation of Lae is most impressive -- and the Lockheed looked right at home.

One question has me curious -- it looks as if they took great pains to recreate the paint scheme of AE's Electra and went to so far as to block out the passenger cabin windows that were skinned over on the original NR16020 -- so then, why did the film's Art Dept apparently not elect to afix the distinctive RDF loop antenna that was mounted above the cockpit on Earhart's plane?

Yeah, the trip was an adventure: on the way to South-Africa, they landed in Malabo Island to refuel. There, the "authorities" charged them to "violation of a restricted area" and request $$$$$$ to release the plane and the crew... Of course, it was only an extortion....
The good point was the plane itself: absolutely no problem during all the trip.

For the loop antenna, according to the owner of the plane (the french
aeronautical journalist Bernard Chabbert), it will be add with computer during the post-production.

There is a hope that a making-of including the entire trip would be produced ...

Wow! This is the first I've heard of this movie.
I can't wait to peep it!


For the longest time, I wasn't a fan of Hillary Swank, but recently I haven begun to change my feelings about her. I thought her performances in Freedom Writers and Million Dollar Baby were just terrific.


Too bad the movies isn't due out until a full year from now.

Just a couple of updates.

For the movie , we built two ful size static aircraft. Both were externally very well done as will be seen in the movie.( we also made full size mock ups of both cockpits for the internal flying scenes)

#1 Full size copy of Amelias Lockheed Vega - it looked so good it fooled some very experienced vintage a/c people.
Originally itwas to go to the Toronto Aerospace Museum, however Paul Allen liked it soo much , he decided to keep it and put it in his Aviation Museum in Seattle WA.

#2 Full size Fokker Tri-Motor on floats - This model was actually put afloat in the Atlantic for scenes and was capable of some taxiing. It was powered by small gas motor mounted behind the mock up engines.- Now resides inthe Canadian Bushplane Heritage Museum in Sault St Marie Ontario Canada.

I was fortunate to watch some of the filming at Rand Airport (FAGM) which is my "home" airport near Johannesburg.
I took quite a few pictures of the Electra and other aircraft used in the set and will post a few once the movie is launched.
I also got to meet Richard Geere ... seems like really a nice bloke ... only quite a bit shorter than I imagined.

Interesting that someone mentioned the RDF loop. For ground shots they had one which was placed in position for filming.
