I was barely over 16 when I did that. He's on the best path!

Here's the man whose airfield we invaded. Don Bussart, he's one of the most extrordinary men from our greatest generation. He flew C-46's over The Hump, C-47's for various air forces in the Orient. He flew for the CIA, and was one of the last US aircraft out of Vietnam when we pulled chocks on the war. He raced a Mosquito in the last Bendix race, and got it to true out at 510mph, using 105 in. and 3100 rpm!!! Lost his T-6 in a poker game in Shanghai, and now at 89 years old, retires to the same room he slept in as a kid on the family farm. He out-drinks anyone in Scotch, and tells stories 'till the cows come home! He's phenomenally sharp for his age, rattling off dates of friends who have passed, where they passed, and what happened. Don has a collection of vintage planes, and classy cars. Life has been good to Don so far.......

I hope you all enjoyed my photo-report as well as I did. Scott, please use any photo for the registry, it'd be my honor!

Vlado,
Was he in the front seat or did that one have a modified gear system to allow the gear to be retracted from the rear ?

Finally got your prop answer......HamStd 22D40-6533. The crank needs to have the oil pressure tap. The governor needs to be changed and a 337 needs to be done. Yes, the AD needs a compliance inspection every 5 years.
Hope that helps.

No performance difference. The advantage is no worry about slinging counterweights or rusty 'dome' sleeves. These guys in Michigan have converted several T-6s to this prop configuration.

Stopped for a cup o tea with Don and Kako yesterday. Don was asking when the next gathering of Texans was going to be at his strip?

Also, I think if there was a Mustang pilot who wanted to land there (instead of just doing a touch and go), yesterday MIGHT have been the day. Probably would sink over the axles while parked though. It was a very cushiony soft field.

Don's such a great guy. Every time I go over there, I get more details on old stories and then get to hear new ones, too. He's rather unassuming, but you could tell he was proud of his DFC. And his Air Force discharge, even though he was never in the Air Force. Someone needs to write a book about this guy (and others like him!).

Then Don was telling us about how he owned a P-47 for 20 minutes. And then traded it in for an AT-6. And then lost it in a poker game. Then won a Mosquito in another poker game. And after that, while he was away his soon to be EX wife sold the Mosquito (which he raced in the 49 Bendix) out from under him for a grand.

So you guys going out for some pre-season practice any time soon? Maybe next time we can get Don to pull a plane or two out and fly along! Perhaps we could turn it into a 90th birthday bash?
