Mr. Beyl, sorry I think you misunderstood the intent of my incredulous
examples. I intended for them to represent "true instances" of history
which didn't need the "rampant writers muse", so prevalent in Hollywood.
Incredibly fascinating stories are not being told....so script writers can
justify their pitiful existance!

Re "Red Tails", could be; B-17s are indeed on the upswing, with one owner currently working on not one but two! In the HBO film only one Fort (Lone Star's "Thunder Bird" minus nose art) was featured; conveniently of course she keeps turning up as a "straggler" for the 332nd to rescue, which is a perfectly truthful basic scenario anywhere in the ETO.
Whatever Lucas' reasons for hanging on to this project even after the '95 film is long since "in the can"...I hope he does indeed get the film made and that it's better still than HBO's...fixing some of those annoying glitches. Lucas is a Warbird buff BTW: so the chances for that are good.
Re the '49 NAR...I love reading "oooo" in response to that idea. It's my dream project (sadly to remain just that...no money...) and I think the story "has it all": underdog low-buck team beats the gazillionaires; triumphant ending is marred by tragedy; there are rumours of an illicit romance; and of course there's this fleet of spectacular old airplanes (several of that year's competitors survive, too, with at least two in flying trim). Even the soundtrack would likely succeed were the film released now, with the present vogue for 40s-era "standards". Whole scenes from the project play themselves on the screen inside my head. Ah, for $115 million or so...
Other ideas? The Soviet WWII female fighter regiments (a "chick flick" full of Warbirds--!); Martin Caidin's "Whip" (5th AF B-25s) or "The Last Dogfight" (P-40s/P-38s); Spencer Dunmore's "Ace" (Me109s, Dora 190s, 262s)...So many great flying flicks yet unmade. Maybe Lucas oughta take a look at one of these before reinventing the Tuskegee wheel!

Howdy SteveT...yup, the B-17's are on the upswing! When I made the
comment about Lucas waiting for the bomber resurections it was "in light
of" the recent info concerning the Thunder Over Michigan's swollen roster
of aircraft!
Imagine the beautiful sound of an "en masse" overflight?? I can't get THAT
SOUND OUTTA MY HEAD...nor do I want to!!! It would be a really
"good time" for folks to record the experience with professional sound
and motion picture equipment!!
1949 NAR..no money for your dream movie? Time to make lemonaide...
maybe a script in your future?
