Bet I'm the only one on WIX who saw this one (on a Spanish-language station) - it was sort of the JFK assassination conspiracy story set in the old West, with Garfield alongside his wife riding through Dallas in a horse-drawn carriage and being shot by an assassin from a high window; the conspirators tried to frame some poor black man... strange movie.

I met Van Johnson in 1994 at the 50th Anniversary of D-Day reenactment in Virginia Beach, at the USO party we had, I think at Oceana NAS. He was a nice guy, and a lot taller than me it seemed. My mom loved him when she was growing up in the 40's. When I met him, I got her his autograph, and told him "My mom loves you!" He replied, "WHERE IS SHE?!" And looked all around, with a BIG smile on his face, like he was excited to meet her... Unfortunately, she was at home in NJ, so she didn't have the opportunity to meet him. He got over his disappointment eventually, I am sure... He was a regular guy & a neat guy to meet- Wish I'd had more of a chance to chat with him that night, but there were hundreds there, as I recall, and he was in demand...

'A guy named Joe' has the only scenes I've ever viewed of the B^stard Lighting , built for Britian W/O turbos that I've ever seen-
Pretty fair actor who always did a good job with the variety of parts he handled over an incredible career, sort of in the Gary Cooper/Jimmy Sterwart mold, the guy next door type, not the big flashy Horrewood actor. Come to think of it, he would have been great in the movie 1941.

I love that quote in your signature.

In the 1949 movie Battlefront, he had spoke the line that about summed up the mood of everyone who ever had a poo poo detail in the war.
OHHHHHHHHHHH! NO!
Rest in Peace Mr Johnson.

Just struck me what my response to his passing is-
"BAKATARI!"
See "Go For Broke" for details...

This is so sad to hear.

One of my favorite old time actors. He was a really good actor IMHO and not one of those flashy types either.
