Hello Again Scott,
If you want to post these, I am sending you 4 photo's related to Apollo 8 40th anniversary thread on WIX.
These four pictures are from the annual John Glenn Lecture at the National Air & Space Museum on the Mall. This year's lecture was a panel discussion by all three Apollo 8 Astronauts in the NASM IMAX Theatre. I apologize for the picture quality - bad sight angle, little pocket camera & no flash allowed.
The three astronauts had a very candid discussion with a real easy give & take that revealed their unique character traits (and helped explain why they were successful people in this world) and their obvious high regard for each other. The all said their prime motivation (the astronaut program at large) was "to beat the Russians", in exactly those words. Their dedication and work ethic is still obvious 40 years after the historic flight - first humans to leave the earth (orbit).
IMHO -
Frank Borman is a "give me a mission and I will do it" kind of fellow. I have met him and spoken with him a few times at Oshkosh and his persona in a one-on-one conversation is exactly the same as his persona in a public setting like this.
Jim Lovell seems the most laid back of the three, but no less impressive for his dedication to the Astronaut program and this mission.
Bill Anders seems to have gotten the big picture of the NASA program & the Apollo program right from the start of his work as an astronaut and clearly articulates his feelings, perceptions and reasoning.
Quite an evening.
John
