Charles Durning was not only wounded at the Battle of the Bulge but supposedly briefly captured and would have been at Malmedy if he hadn't escaped.

I don't want to affront anybody's beliefs, but I have not seen any definitive writing about where Charles Durning served. This is not to say that he did not serve, but I have seen everything from Ranger service at Point Du Hoc, to 1st Infantry Division service at D-Day to Malmedy Massacre service, to POW status, to what is written here. I would like to hear what he actually did. I do not believe that he is faking anything, just that there are a lot of bad researchers (read, tabloid writers) who write about him, and he has never put anything into the public eye about where he served to my knowledge. Again, I don't suspect him- but if anybody can find a definitive source that describes his service, I'd like to see it.

Everytime we start these threads about Hollywood actors and actresses, I'm still amazed at the WWII record of Jimmy Stewart which always stands out to me.

Bob Barker (The Price is Right), William Conrad (Cannon) and Dennis Weaver (McCloud) on that list were all WW2 USN F4U pilots. And Scotty from Star Trek lost a finger in Normandy on D-Day and then retrained to be a pilot!
I don't think that any of those folks though were any more special than any of the millions that served. There were lots of heroes in that war.
So what of the crop of Hollywood primadonnas of the last 25 years has even served in the now all-volunteer US military?

He was the real deal all right. I know a former B-17 pilot whose crew was checked out by Stewart in the states. Says he was completely down to earth only interested in getting the job done and loved flying. If the war had lasted another year Stewart would probably have been a wing commander.
