Thanks Chris for the intro........... Yep, we have a shiny new engine just waiting to be installed!
Those maintenance items are already getting squared away......
OK, everyone remember the tunnel gun fixture that Gary slaved over... well the plexi or lexan had developed a few defects over the last year and had to be replaced.......well, here is a pic of the original piece..........
The tunnel gun assembly with the new "glass" installed.....
Yes, the "glass" is in there! Lots of work to be done on "Ol'927", but we will get it done..... More to come..and hopefully time to a get a surprise or two installed for the 09 season.... Alan

It "developed a few defects" when the airplane sat on it's tail a while back, while on tour, and busted the glass. An "atta boy" goes out to whoever installed the new glass. Hopefully, folks will also keep the new glass clean as well. (Hint Hint).

Also, lets all never forget to have that gun inplace while sitting static and on all flights!! Really, the only time it should be removed is for landing and takeoff wouldn't you say Gary?

After Gary busted his *** making that door, YES it should have the gun in it whenever possible!

...Add it to the preflight (gun stowed prior to removal of pogo, replaced after takeoff), landing check (gun stowed), and postflight (gun reinstalled after pogo secured) checklists!

The current before taxi, after takeoff and the inrange check lists are being revised over winter maintenance to include that!

Here is just a quick update on "Ol'927"! We are just a few hours of work away from removing the #3 engine... the nose bowl, cowl flap hoop, prop, exhaust collector ring, and air intake box have all been removed. The #1 vacuum pump has been removed for servicing, panels on all other engines have been opened up. Still lots to do, but items are getting checked off from the maintenance list..... Still have some safety wiring left to perform on the new engine, but a lot was accomplished on the "work party" this past Thursday night... these are just a few pics from the other night...... Oh, BTW, just another shameless plug for joining the CAF and the B-29/B-24 Squadron. Join up! Meetings are at Cavanaugh's Flight Museum... Lots of fun working on "big iron" airplanes, great people, and great surroundings.

Mark, that is a great picture, for many different reasons......
It is a great example of things that we (B-29/B-24 Squadron) wish to do in furthering the re-configuration of "Ol' 927", as begun by Gary.
1) One easily do-able item (and looks really cool) is the "bubble type" sliding cockpit windows.... Gary Norville, any spares available?
The other items are not so easy..... (well maybe not),
2) Installing the exhaust collector rings to exit downwards. Of course the question is how much will you have to modify the dishpan and the cowling..... a lot, some, or none....
3) Another item that Don Obreiter (B-24 Maintenance Officer) mentioned was moving the oil coolers back to their original position, into the wings.
4) Not to neglect the internal fit out, fellow WIX'er and CAF'er, Chris Trott is working on getting together the original radio rack and table installation for the B-24A. Lots of little things........
Personally for me, the "Big Enchilada" is all of the above, plus three additional items
A) emergency stowage compartments above the wings
B) an operational upper gunner station, complete with sliding hatch
C) operational bomb bay doors!
Well, Ok, enough running off at the mouth, as I am at work tonight, but a work party was in progress. I will have pictures sent tonight and (hopefully) posted tonight/tomorrow. The #3 engine is now ready to be taken off..... Mike Dillon one of our A/P members said there will be a work party next week on both Tuesday AND Thursday (Jan 13th & 15th). I will be working next Tuesday night at my hospital in Dallas, but will be at the hangar on Thursday. Thanks all...

Hey everyone, just got a chance to look over this pic just a bit more.... Hey Chris, check out the aerial antenna just behind the #4 engine.... and then also check out the nose gear mud flap! I'll keep looking over this picture to see what else is interesting... oops, in this picture, 927 also has that big ADF football sitting behind the ADF loop......hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
