I hadn't thought about what Group or aircraft paint scheme to be chosen. I am glad I don't have that decision to make--there are hundreds of 8th Air Force B-17s that I would be happy to see replicated for the Museum display. Maybe 100th Group? 447th? Too many deserving possibilities.

2 Beauts or Warbride would be cool. 2 beauts would really be different, as I don't think most people have ever seen the nose art not on the nose. But they will probably want something more representative of the group.

about twenty minutes ago, I got off the telephone with the Mighty Eight Air Force Museum in Savannah, Georgia.
The B-17 outta the NASM has arrived in Savannah, and at the time I was talking to the woman on the phone, she said that they were working on trying to get the fuselage into the building. Wings engines etc are there too.

The venerable B-17
Since it was such a key element of airpower during World War II, you may have wondered why the National Air and Space Museum does not display a Boeing B-17 bomber. After all, 12,371 were manufactured by the Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed aircraft companies. As a matter of fact, the Smithsonian will have a B-17 on display in the future. Meanwhile, Aeronautics Division curator Dik Daso has been working with other museums to insure that the existing B-17s receive the best possible care and availability to the public. Here is the status of some of the B-17s.
RB-17D Swoose was in storage at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration and Storage facility until it was transferred to the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, where it is being readied for display.

B-17F Memphis Belle was on display on Mud Island in Memphis, TN. It is now being prepared for display at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

B-17G Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby was restored by the National Museum of the US Air Force with help from volunteers at Dover AFB, DE.

B-17G, has been transferred by the National Air and Space Museum to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum near Savannah, Georgia.

Dik Daso says, “After the Air Force’s exterior restoration of the B-17F Memphis Belle is completed, the B-17G Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby will be transferred to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center from Dayton, Ohio. The National Air and Space Museum’s collection will be greatly enhanced by adding a combat veteran 8th Air Force B-17G -- the iconic version of that aircraft”

Awsome. I just hope they remember... cut the building NOT the airplane :lol:

Perhaps they just mean "exterior" as in display worthy. They could always add small items to the interior after it is on display.

IIRC, NMUSAF regularly puts a/c on display once the exterior is complete, or nearly so, and then continues interior work. I'm all for seing the a/c on display like that.
