I can see the possible confusion ... the 56th was playing with colors on their noses back during their US training days, IIRC, and they indeed inspired the later 8th AF-wide system of colored noses as the primary ID. Most 8th AF squadron rudder colors came into being ~October '44.

My fave 8th AF P-47 nose markings are the 353rd black/yellow "diamonds", and I also think nothing looks more "8th AF Mustang" than their later Mustangs with the black/yellow checks - a few pics I have handy in my Photobucket files:

Did the 9th AF do the same thing?

The 9th AF Fighter Groups used a system of the nose was used for squadron color's/markings with the tail the group color but not all the groups used this .
Some never had Group or squadron markings like the 366 FG just used the regular ETO bands.
The 9th had various TAC that changed duing the war making the group markings questions hard to answer but this sight will do a better job than I can.

Is this the same a/c as Jack posted? Previously unidentified photos a 56th FG machine from a collection from Danny Morris of the Essex Aviation Group.

Have temporarily uploaded them to my website - see link:-

What do you think

Regards

Jason

The damage and terrain certainly makes it appear that they are the same incident, Jason.

RIP Lt. Hines.
