ESCAPE FROM IRON RANGE

Born in the USA, flown in combat in the Pacific, crashed and forgotten in Northern Australia, shipped to New Zealand for rebuild - but then sold back to the USA where it’s rebuild continued! This iconic warplane has now made a triumphant return to the skies, looking for all the world as though it has just rolled off the production line. P-40N-5, 42-105306 has made a remarkable journey which is described in this article by Roger Cain, who was also afforded the privilege of shooting the first air to airs of the fighter.

A SPARTAN EXISTENCE

New Zealand is fortunate enough to be the home of three of the four known surviving Simmonds Spartan biplanes. In this article we take a look at the history of the aircraft and profile the survivors. Photographer Gavin Conroy was able to get along side Bob Carry’s recently flown immaculate ZK-ABK – with stunning results!

CAPTURING A CANSO

Canadian based Classic Wings photographer Doug Fisher was recently able to ‘capture’ the Canadian Warplane Heritage’s magnificent Canso recently. The aircraft is maintained in superb condition and flown regularly as a tribute to the RCAF and the crews that served to keep Canadian waters free of the U-boat threat. Apart from some evocative images, we take a short look at the type’s history in Canada and the history of this example in particular.

NAVAL GAZING!

In the previous edition we took a look at A. and T. Recovery and their efforts to successfully raise some three dozen historic Navy aircraft from the cold waters of Lake Michigan. Through forward thinking and ‘hands on’ expertise several combat veterans and previously rare aircraft now grace not only the National Museum of Aviation, but museums throughout the US. The good news is that these recoveries have been cleared to resume, with a Dauntless due to be raised when lake conditions allow, projected to be sometime in March.

P-38 SURVIVORS PT.3

In this, our final overview of the surviving P-38s, we take a look at the few early models that survive and some of the remaining wrecks and relics. As the reader will discover a few of the latter have a good chance of being returned to their former glory in the foreseeable future, good news for fans of Lockheed’s ‘Twin Boomed Terror’.

D.H. HAWK MOTH

Our last mystery aircraft was the DH-75 of which only seven production models of this four-seat cabin monoplane were built due to problems with poor performance and competition from a number of American types already in production which could be had more cheaply.
