WOW! Sounded like the crowd liked it! How big a fine did they have to pay the state of CA for all that pollution and fuel wastage!

How far beyond the WALL OF FIRE do the AC fly? Would NOT want to be above that inferno flying that low!!!!

And I remember Dayton 2003 when the record set at that show was 3,200 feet!

last time I checked, Yuma is in Arizona, even thought we don't like to admit it. It could be worse, we could have Blythe.

Oops, misread location....Burn baby BURN!!!!

Yeah, but we had to follow California enviro-mandates when I worked in Yuma twenty years ago.

I've said it before...I'll say it again. Just what does the TORA show contribute? Anyone can fire up two miles of diesel fuel WITHOUT an airplane flying over it.
I guess it's just me.

Mudge the mudge

ps. Steve...Mrs. Mudge and I were at Dayton 2003. Don't recall seeing you there.

Ah c'mon, it's tradition

And the P-40 always smokes the Zero.

I asked a Zero pilot once.

Mon Mar 16, 2009 1:53 pm

And what's the purpose of this?

Do any of the funds to pay for the fuel and explosives, come from members dues?

If it is an official CAF activity, then is it CAF supported?

Tradition does not cut it for me, supposedly the money should be used to restore and fly the airplanes?

Things like this one (and others) have seen a lot of people drop their membership...

Tora operates like any other wing/unit. They get no additional support from HQ. Tora must make enough money to support itself, they operate under the umbrella of the CAF for insurance et.

Airshow pyro is bid on by a number of organizations, EOD/Blastards/Tora and others. It is expensive, at some military shows, the gov't supplies the HE, and Tora etc., only provides the expertise.

At the HQ show, yes pyro is paid for by HQ, but I do know that EOD/Blastards also work very hard to get local support so that HQ has as small of a bill as possible.

I hope that this helps answers your questions/concerns.

It brings in customers.

It draws attention.

It makes the news programs that draws attention and brings in customers.

Attention and customers brings in money to pay for the diesel fuel and time to rig the show...and brings in money to purchase, restore and fly airplanes.

Seeing it once, a long time ago was enough for me. But there a lots of people who haven't seen it and want to.

Not having it would bring in a lot more complaints.

Kind of like going to see the Stones, and they don't perform Satisfaction...or Dire Straits not playing Sultans of Swing.

If you just want to see stuff blown up...watch Mythbusters.

Well said Mudge! We are fellow curmudgeons. It was a crass and pointless exercise that deserves criticism.

I can see where excessive amounts of fire and smoke would make one wonder about the necessity of it ALL.

But the one thing it adds to the show that is missing from Airshows WITHOUT the pyro is the sense of the violence that is only implied by having what is in essence a flying parade.

The kids (and other audience member's) reaction as caught on the video points to the fact that for a segment of the paying public there certainly is an OH WOW factor that PYRO adds to the show.

What it adds is interest for kids (and some adults) so that we can convert them into the NEXT full grown Warbird huggin' generation of pilots, mechanics and supporters of tomorrow's Warbird Community.
(I seem to recall seeing pictures of the likes of Jack Cook as a little nipper sitting on a Corsair tyre at an airshow. In his, mine and a lot of other WIXoids, our interest was generational and things going BOOM would have mattered NOT one way or another. But for some customers the prospects of copious amounts of bangs, smoke and mayhem are what got them in the gates.)

By the same token I have to wonder about the JET truck and what my veteran friend calls "The Flip Flop" acts. By that he means the non-warbird acrobatic acts.

The point being is it is all part of the Flying Circus!
It can't all be just one act or we wouldn't draw the crowds necessary to pay for all the warbirds that WE love.

Oh well... VERY FEW POLAR BEARS WERE DROWNED making that wall of FIRE.

Thank you, Chris.

I don't intend to cause a ruckus, but IMHO, the main objective (and I would have to go do some research on this) for the CAF is to preserve and fly the airplanes.

Explosions and Hollywood special effects are nice, but they also cost money that just goes boom...

Tulio
