Greetings ! As we all know the B-25 Flew of the Carrier Hornet !
I was wondering did any other None Navy, Aircraft were ever flown off a Carrier for a Combat mission ?

P-40s and Spitfires did for the North Africa landings, I believe it was Operation Torch and the carrier was the Ranger. Sorry, I'm going from memory as I don't have my references.

Weren't P-47s also flown off carriers?

I would like to read about these too. Never heard of any other than carrier planes flown off carriers on combat missions.
For non-combat missions, The U-2, C-130 and OV-10 have flown from carriers, or Amphibs in the case of the Bronco.

Yes somewhere in the Pacific. I don't know if it was a combat mission or just delivery. For non combat related non Navy aircraft on carriers there was the C-130 and the U-2.

P-40's on the USS Chenango, Nov. 42.

IIRC, it was the 318th FG P-47s which were catapulted off escort carriers so they could fly to their bases shortly after Saipan was captured.

IIRC L-4s and L-5s were flown off escort carriers (and special LSTs) to act as artillery spotters.

And wasn't a Spitfire rigged to launch off of a ship, with rockets, for convoy protection?
Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:29 pm
That was a Hurricane with the rocket assist. The CAM system. Talk about a throwaway weapons system! It worked, but was only a stop gap system until REAL air coverage could be arranged!

Lots of P-39s, 40s and 47s where launched of CVEs.
Judy Pay's P-40F 41-14112 was flown off the USS Nassau
by Capt Sam Hitchcock of the 44th FS to Efate in 1942.
Probably the only surviving example of that endeavor.

Video of P-40's launching from a carrier
But they are just going to airfields in north Africa. Not on combat missions.

Capt Sam Hitchcock launching in 41-14112 from the Nassau.

I remember an Auster flew off a Royal Navy carrier. This aircraft ended up here in New Zealand but crashed a few years ago I think.

You recall correctly. They were also flown off the "Brodie" ship. L-4s were first flown off for the TORCH landings.
