The amazing thing about the 130 is it did it over and over, totally unassisted. It was being tested as a heavy COD possibility. That aircraft still exists.

I recently saw a video of a 130 modified in the 70's with forward firing rockets ahead of the wing on the fus. As I remember it was being quickly developed for the Iran hostage rescue. The rockets fired a few feet off the ground, it pretty much stopped in midair and the resulting hard landing destroyed the plane.

it took them actually trying it full scale and wasting an aircraft to realize what the results would be.

I would like to read about these too. Never heard of any other than carrier planes flown off carriers on combat missions.

For non-combat missions, The U-2, C-130 and OV-10 have flown from carriers, or Amphibs in the case of the Bronco.

Pretty sure he meant Amphibious Assult ships... although that would be interesting to see.

The trials took place on the Saratoga (Carrier) and Nassau (Amphibious Assault Ship). Saw video of it on Wings, I think.

The video of the C-130 modified for the hostage rescue mission was spectacular. I don't remember the exact reason, but the rockets fired early and the a/c dropped in from too great of a height to absorb the impact. Had to been a heck of a ride for the test crew. The loss of the aircraft forced planners to shift to conventional landings and use of helicopters. Given the short timeframe, the design and mod crews produced a unique solution to try and fill a need.
