Warbird Information Exchange

Can anyone tell me what the correct abbreviation for "Squadron" would be. I have seen it a couple of different ways.

in the navy they painted special parking for the squadron command...the rocket scientists abbreviated it...it said RESERV'D SQUADRN COMANDR...of course I never got a picture of it.

Sqn. quite often, also Sqdrn.

In the UK it's invariably Sqn.

Sqdn is also a common abbr....

In the US Navy, "RON" is used, as in FITRON 21 (Fighting or Fighter Squadron 21.)

The real answer to your question is it depends on whose squadron you are referring to...

Depends on what use and where. In Commonwealth originated publications, it's usually 'Sqn', and sometimes SQN in military use in the Commonwealth. Publications and organisations usually have a Style Sheet or go on precedent - previous use being a good guide to their preference. Other non specialist presses would probably go with Hart's Rules or equivalent. Can't comment on US usage authoritatively. Tell us what for, and you might get a more precise answer, beyond the good stuff here already.

Most of the WWII 2nd Air Force documents in my possession use SQ., though SQN. sneaks in once in a while. I don't know if the AAF had a definitive abbreviation or not since there is considerable variation from station to station and unit to unit.
