My cousin dropped off a box of my Grandpa's stuff today. He passed away last summer. These pictures were in the box. He did not take them but the story goes he bought them while stationed in Shanghi in '45-46.

The configuration of the nose turret fairing suggests that Nip Nipper may have been converted to a C-109 fuel tanker. Also, notice that the bombardier station is much deeper than an H or later Liberator. This is a "D" that had a nose turret grafted on at the Oklahoma City Depot. Her serial number is 42-40391, a B-24D-53-CO that originally served with the 308th Group, 373rd Squadron. Baugher shows her as being written off in Indo-China on 7 February, 1945.

Can anybody confirm that is Chiang Kai Shek in the a/c in the upper pic? If so, makes a neat pic even more so! Looks like him, same style of uniform, Nationalist China disc on crown of hat...

That photo of Nip Nipper inspired me to do a little research on the 308th Bombardment Group. They had to do all their own "trucking" across the Hump between India and China according to the website history. http://www.usaaf-in-cbi.com/308th_web/index.htm There are several of the nose turretless modifications in the aircraft photo section.
