My bud Steve H. told me this AM that they are looking for one prop blade...damage very minor. Meanwhile L39 written off on landing at Goulburn NSW Australia. Overran strip and tore off a wing etc. Pilot OK...

Your link didn't work for me...it said that I "do not appear to be the owner of the album" in question. Is there a different link that will do the trick? I'd love to see those photos.

I've always wondered why the CAF crashes their planes (I know its unintentional, but still, WHY???)

Those guys run about a half a zillion flight operations a year. I'd think that on the whole, given the size of the operation, geographic displacement, number of different aircraft, different types of aircraft, different pilots, ect, ect, that they are probably way behind the curve in incidents/accidents.

Hi OP

Other thing is that we are calling this a crash - if it hadn't been the CAF it may have even gone unreported as by the sound of it it was a relatively minor accident which does happen to a lot of aircraft in their lives. We have a Spitfire flying here that nosed over at an airshow and smashed the prop but it wasn't called a crash and nobody was very interested except that it was made airworthy again as soon as possible.

I am critical of the CAF when necessary but calling this one a crash is a little of a long bow to draw from the accounts I have seen.

Regards
john P

FWIW, if something makes the FAA accident report, they always
call it at the very least, "substantial damage".

I don't know how to say this while trying to maintain a mediocum
of political correctness, but the on-scene investigators the FAA
and NTSB are sending these days...? well... things are just different
than they used to be, I'll just leave it at that.

Basically, if the Feds show up and the "incident" makes the accident
run, it will say "substantial damage". Substantial to them might be
small potatoes to you and me.... might not. It depends upon who
submits the report.

I help recover crashed/wrecked (general aviation) aircraft on a regular
basis. Sometimes the tide swings the other way (FAA says substantial
damage, I arrive on scene with my colleauges and we all say without a
doubt, this thing will never fly again!). That's usually when we drag
the cutoff saw out and "make it smaller" to make it easier to load
the carcass up and transport it off-scene.

Gotta love the FAA, the aren't so bad right now, but they sure can improve. What's that saying about a government that doesn't trust it's own people?

You guys would really be surprised how many Warbirds get dinged up each year that the general public never hears about. A lot of folks have "incidents" at their own or privately owned strips which go unreported & therefore get no press or FAA attention. I personally know of several that resulted in no injuries, some damage, but it would be a breech of trust for me to give details. The CAF has had more than its share of problems, but they ain't the only ones. I am just thankfull no body hurt with the P-39 & Corsair deals.
Regards
Robbie

They seem to classify the severity of the damage based on the following:

Minor Damage - nothing more but a small ding that couldn't keep the airplane from taking off right now, if it wanted to

Destroyed - Nothing but tiny charred pieces of wreckage that doesn't even look like an airplace

Substantial damage - Everything else

In this instance of the CAF P-51C, they called it substantial damage. For the average airplane, it would've been "destroyed" in most people's minds. But considering the rarity of that aircraft, it will fly again.
