I’m torn on this. On one hand, the purist side of me would want it exactly as it was. The other side of me has its own ideas on what would look good. Especially if you’re trying to do the air show circuit, you want a paint job that attracts the eye. That’s why you see so many Mustangs flying today painted with invasion stripes or personal markings of aces, I guess.
In a way, I have this very issue sitting in my garage. I own a WW2 Jeep which I know how it was marked in WW2 and who used it. It was a USN Jeep, used out of a shipyard and sub base. But as a former Army officer and re-enactor with no substantial interest in Navy anything (other than planes), I painted it to represent a Allied Communication Zone (the command between the Channel and the front lines in France) vehicle in the summer of 1944.
