P-38 on a stick

During my recent visit to McGuire AFB in New Jersey to schedule for my AFOQT so I can go fly an A-10, I came accross a P-38 as well as some other aircraft that I like. Enjoy the pics

Forgot what kind this is, but still interesting


If I can't get A-10s, I'll gladly fly one of these, a KC-10 (love the DC-10s)

ANd educate and inspire many men about why this base is named what it is. The P-38 is kept in good condition. I would still like to see it indoors, but I think this P-38 serves a special purpose. The men and woman of that unit take great pride in that P-38.

Yeah, that AFB definitely should have a real -38 in McGuire's markings. He's all too underappreciated. It's bad enough that most folks don't know who Bong was.

They could educate alot more airman by having a flyable P-38, than a P-38 on a stick. That plane flew into the base. If they wanted a P-38 that much, there are 2 P-38 sthat have been rebuilt out of wrecks from Alaska for display at different locations.

Or they could use a fiberglass P-38 like they have at Lackland. Looks real enough, especially on a pole.

No way. Who is going to fly this AF maintained P-38? I could see it becoming one of those deal that some general wants to fly it, so we better let him. This is the one gate aircraft that really does belong there, and really is taken care of. having been there and dealt with some of those guys, they take alot of pride in their history, and namesake. Would it be nice to see it come in? Sure, but it is serving a great purpose there.

sticking a flyable airplane on a pole outside to rot is serving a great purpose ? Look at the Stratford Corsair if you want to know what the P-38 will look like in the future. As far as flying it, the RAF does a good job with thier BBMF, the air force should copy them.

No wrong. That Corsair is a good example of sticking an aircraft on a pole, and not touching it. Do you know the restoration program and upkeep for the airplane? Have you ever seen it? The plane is kept in very nice condition. By the way it ended up there after it was wrecked. Once again, go there, see it, talk to the people at the base, then tell me that it doesn't belong there.

It suffered a nose gear failure on the ferry flight there resulting in minor damaged that was quickly repaired.

go look at any plane that sits outside, in the NJ weather, and I don't care how much care they recieve, they are going to rot. Sure they take it down and give it a coat of paint, and maybe clean a little external corrosion, but the point remains, they took a FLYABLE plane and stuck it on a pole to rot. It should be replaced with a fiberglass replica. Even the Hill AFB P-38 gets treated better than the NJ one, at least it is inside and on it's wheels.
