This pic was presented as a P-51D panel.



We don't know what it is, but we do know it's not a standard P-51D panel, or even in a standard P-51 (going by the windscreen frame).

Any offers?

Yes clearly T-6 by the panel and the steel tube framing visible on the lower RHS of the photo. - I think the apparant "168" part number of the photo in the bottom RHS probably confirms it as T-6G in any case.

(NA-168 was the charge number and serial number prefix for the T6-G production run)

It's a slightly embarrassing story...

It's an official NAA image (I think) that got gathered into a batch of P-51 images from NAA, and passed on in that only ever getting a cursory glance and just 'oh, odd P-51'... All we knew was it was in a P-51D batch, ergo it was an odd P-51 (rather than standing back and seeing what else it might be!)

I should've spotted it (thanks Chuck!) but it was run past a few well known P-51 cognoscenti who will remain nameless, as we 'knew' it was P-51 were just puzzled... and referred back to the person whose photo collection it came out of and even he didn't spot it was T-6.

That invidious preconception thing.

There's a lesson here, and when I've learned it, I'll let you know what it is!

I will stand up and be counted! - all I knew it was like no P-51 panel that I had ever seen before . Not being particularly familar with the T-6 it never ocurred to me it might be one. having said that I did fly in one once but I think I was looking out of the window most of the time
