These P-40's at Bellows where envolved in a taxi accidant on December 8th. These were not damaged during the attack.

Hey Nathan,That is no taxi accident. The bird with the gash was struck by the bird with the missing outboard left wing. This happened on landing because the flaps are down on the bird with the gear knocked out.[/quote]

Hi "Hang",
The incident happened in the pre-dawn operation on 8 Dec....according to the guys on the ground... I am not priviledged to more than they were launching planes.
HTH,
David Aiken
PS: After the 100thBG "Hang the Expense III" was sent to depot to repair the tail...the test pilot was an ex-100th BG pilot... and he used ""III" as the photographer plane while they made several aerial photos from which the MONOGRAM 1/48 P-38 (circa 1962) markings originated. I did an brief article in an OLD IPMS QUARTERLY (circa 1968-9?) on the P-38.

Since we were looking at P-36's I just realized that the NMUSAF P-36 was the first P-36 delivered to the USAAC.

Wright Field kept an early sample of each varient plane off the production line to have tests run if something untoward happened in combat.

...the B-17C was kept and when freezing of oxygen and guns happened to the RAF versions, the 88th RS crews were called in to run tests on that Wright Field plane.

Trivia: what is the ship name applied BELOW the "2-O-3" on the KINGFISHER posted above (page 4)? At least, it would be on the actual plane...

I'm gonna have to guess..USS California? I think I remember reading that the Oklahoma Kingfisher was onboard ship on December 7th(they recovered parts of it during a dredging operation in the early 1990's). And I think I remember seeing pictures of the USS Tennessee and seeing Kingfishers on it on December 7th. So that is why I am guessing The USS California. Do I win?

I believe the serial number is 38-001.I think she was a Pratt and Whitney test bed and is the only reason she survived. The guy from Alabama bought it from P&W is what I have been told.

When it comes down to it you won't be able to make any 100% accurate profile of Pearl Harbor P-40 and P-36.s Info and facts keep changing about these aircraft. Pearl Harbor P-40's and P-36's are one of the biggest aircraft markings mysteries of WWII. It sure makes a guy like me that want to build Pearl Harbor P-40 models very frustrated!! :x But I am sure someday a few more facts and photos will show and we will be able to see the markings of a few more PH aircraft. Untill then keep searching and keep hoping!

Cheers,
Nathan
