PB2Y Coronado

Sun Dec 20, 2009 3:52 pm

Does anyone know of one flying on west coast? My friend saw one at the Petaluma CA airport. He found out it is owned my a gentleman that flew in it duringn WWII. it is almost all original, except it had the later blister windows added to sides for observation advantage. He said it sounded sweet. no pics or #'s, I have to train my friend about warbird spotting requirements. :D

There's only one existing Coranado and that is in the US Navy Museum in Pensacola.
Must have been a PBY with that blister mention.

Not the Bird Innovator. It had the 2 outboards remove a few years back and is sitting at Aurora Airport for a very long time.

I don't recall many 4 engined amphibians other than the Shin Meiwa US-1A, US-2. The Martin JRM Mars, Consolidated PB2Y Coronado, Short S.25 Sunderland, and most other large 4 engined flying boats are seaplanes. The Petaluma Municipal Airport is land locked and doesn't have facilty for seaplane beaching that I am aware of.

I would venture a guess that it was probably an Albatross... considering that there are a few just up the road at Sonoma Co. Airport. Both Petaluma Mun and Gnoss Field are 75 ft wide and 3500 ft long (about) so I highly doubt an Albatross would be down at either of those anyhow. I guess an HU-16 can look like it has four engines with the floats and all...

I snapped a few pictures of the Coronado in Pensacola earlier this year when I toured the restoration shops.

The Coronado in the NMNA survives thanks to Howard Hughes. He bought it to learn how to handle stearing a large flying boat to help him learn to fly the Spruce Goose. I'm glad that it is getting restored and also glad that the NMNA is in the process of building the large building to house the rest of it's collection.
