A few years back there was a requirement put forth by the FAA for all aircraft to have their serial numbers marked permanently on the outside of the aircraft. Some have done that with paint, others have done that with decals or metal plates. Don't know what this particular case depicts, just realize that there may be plates on some aircraft which were not installed by the factory or in military service.

If it is somewhere on the aft tailcone that would be it! Make, model, and serial number. Looks a bit home made, but a very clean job of it.

You may already know this, FAH, but that *is* a BT-13. Attached is a pic of the firewall on ours, recently undergoing an engine o/h.

Also, bdk is correct regarding the ID plate under the horizontal. It's there to comply with FAA rules, so they will vary aircraft to aircraft.

When I get a chance, I will put up a pic of the plate on ours. BTW, it's damned hard to tell, but I think that is a Pratt engine on the example above.

HI THE DATA PLATE IS A F.A.A/D.E.A. REQUIREMENT ITS MADE OF STAINLESS STEEL WITH MAKE,MODEL,AND N NUMBER INGRAVED ON THE TAG,IT MUST BE LOCATED ON THE TAIL SECTION CLOSE TO THE HORIZONAL STAB.IT IS USED TO HELP IDENTIFY THE REMAINS OF AN A/C IN CASE OF A CRASH/FIRE.THANKS MIKE
