Now is a great time to consider donating blood. The period of time around the holidays always seems cause a blood shoratge. When you are done you will have a good feeling about yourself and who knows you just might save a person's life. I say this now because I am out the door soon to donate some blood.

I just got my "two gallon" pin a month ago. The local blood center comes to my workplace every 8 weeks and makes it very easy to donate. I also signed on to be a bone marrow donor.

Alas, I cannot donate blood, something about pesky cancer cells floating around. Can I donate someone else's blood?

Curious to what you guys down south have to say. Up here Transport Canada says that pilots are medically unfit to fly within 48hours of donating blood (TC AIR 3.14). Does the FAA have any similar regulation?

I've donated 10 times so far. A pint at a time... dunno how much that is.... a pint is 500ml? Then that would be 5 Litres.... umm.... then back to gallons... that's 1.4 Gal or so?

the Canada Blood Services is pretty good at pestering your for blood with phone calls especially to remind you that you're able to donate again.

I have been asked to donate platelets because I have a good blood type, but I'm unsure about how long it takes. I hate needles but donate blood because it is important. Platelets are really important for Leukemia patients (mainly kids) and I really want to help those poor kids out... but a needle sticking in me for over an hour is kind of unnerving to me.

And, is there any required time before flying for platelet donations? I figure not, considering the donation takes blood out, removes the platelets, then puts the blood back in the body.... so it should be fine, right?

Peace,

David
