That's a good question, Is Polar actualy a P-51 A? or a D model? I only wish we could get an A model in Europe, I missed Flying Legends when the A-36 came over in 2003, Very disapointed i missed it, But I'm determined to see one some day.

It was built/modified out of a D model, using a recovered A model wreck. It is registered as an A model (the recovered wreck), but it consists mostly of D model parts. Hence, the discussion in the thread. There are significant design differences both in the fuselage and wing between an A and a D.

It's a totally unique version of the Mustang built from authentic Mustang parts. A "Frankenstang" if you will.

Well whatever it is, it surely does sound good, and look good in the air and on the the ground. Hey -- it's a "cabin model" (so there you purists-- I didn't use the "R" word) Mustang with an Allison -- that makes it good on several levels!

I remember reading about this aeroplane in Air Classics (when I wasn't old enough to know better  ) in the early eighties. Back then, a new coat of paint was considered a major restoration. If you couldn't put together an aeroplane with bits off the shelf, it was considered beyond hope. The photos I remember of the wreck of this particular 'A' model would definitely be considered a "builder" these days. I hate to think what was thrown out from this one! It's also a pity that a potential 'D ' id was probably sacrificed too. :(

It wasn't just a potential.

But, again, you have to put it in perspective. Flyable Mustangs were worth about 1/4 or what they are worth today, and there wasn't a premium on IDs because there were more than enough airframes with clear-ish IDs if someone wanted to restore one.

Hello All,
Here are some pics of the POF P-51A Model recently at Chino. They had the access panels open for the radiator and had the engine cowling off:
