This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

WOW!

and me with an empty piggy bank! I think the cost to make her a flyer would be prohibitive, aside from the rarity.

Sweet Baby Jesus on a pogo stick!
What is the story on this bird?

Liberated from Germany in 1945 (I am assuming this), more recent history follows. Two He 162 A-2s (Werk Nummer 120086 and 120076) were owned by Canada Aviation Museum, 120086 is disassembled and only accessible to the public on a limited basis. Werk Nummer 120076 was traded to Aero Vintage in the UK for a Bristol Fighter (G-AANM, D-7889) in December 2006. Investigations are currently being made into the practicality of an airworthy restoration of Werk Nummer 120076. Aircraft in Profile 203 reports both aircraft as having being refurbished in Canada in the 1960s.
A more complete history of the bird would be nice!

The He 162 at Planes of Fame was supposed to also be for sale - I think I heard for $150K several years ago. Was this ever sold? Is it still at PoF?

Or could it? I always thought the Salamander looked like a very well designed fighter. But how were the handling characteristics of the fighter?
What if this particular example in question was indeed restored back to stock 1945 condition, while at the same time a full scan and layout of parts was undertaken to essentially reverse engineer more 162's? Very similar to the Stormbirds from Washington.
I'd like to see what a fully updated and modified (new build) version of 162 could do around the pylons.

AFAIK neither of the He-162s have been touched since being evaluated postwar.
(I've seen '086 in storage in Ottawa and can vouch for that one.)
I'm surprised that Luftwaffe enthusiasts haven't done a more complete study of them as they are
very, very well preserved.
