The cooling fan, as noted by others here, was geared to a transmission. Heres a cutaway of the engine I found. Hope its not copyrighted!

If that's a wartime Luftwaffe diagram, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I've been told that all legal copyrights were given up by the Axis as part of the "war reparations". If it's a post-war diagram, you might have issues. Hopefully one of our lawyer types can pipe in here to set the record straight.
