Dislikable paint schemes and markings

Vlado - I have to ask just because I love the mustang and curious about this... I see some beautiful mustangs coming out of some well known restoration shops with the inner gear doors painted green... Do you think it's just the owners preferrence as to what colors they choose ? Like I said - just curious because I'm a big mustang fan... Thank you,

Sorry, I couldn't give you a specific answer. Might be any reason why green would be applied - shop didn't really know, owner asked for it, etc.

Truthfully if I had a P-40 I would have to put teeth on it and name it after my daughter. It just seems right to me.

Didn't Ken Burnstine do that with his P-51 already? BEST PAINT JOB EVER on a Mustang, in my opinion!!!!

That one really shows that even an inaccurate paint scheme can look nice, if it is done tastefully.

And nose art is just plain fun....military paint or not! (and I am looking for a good one to put on my Honda)


There are a few warbird paint jobs out there that I don't like too much, some with a modern twist that are a bit funky....
But it NEVER detracts from the airplane underneath...especially if they are flying!

Seriously, IMHO the best paint schemes on modern warbirds are the Cottonmouth and on the Mustang Quick Silver. I also quite like Lewis Shaw's Mustang... plain and simple. Anything which accents the lines of a classic bird.
I understand people painting their airplanes in the markings of their favorite ace or unit or whatever, and I don't really care if the invasion stripes are 3 inches thick or 4 inches thick... I'm sure if you offered the owner the money then they might consider some editing. However, there is something to be said for originality in finding a new scheme. I don't understand why many people's goal is own a Mustang in CY's colors or a Corsair a la Pappy Boyington.

If you have the chance, be creative. Find a rare scheme that no one has ever used. When was the last time you saw an Albatross or a B-25 in RCAF colors?

The funny thing is a Corsair in Boyington's markings would be a change. I don't know of any that fly in his markings. I know of a few static ones only. I think it would be cool to do one in his real markings not Lucy Belle which he never actually flew in combat.

I will say this about the tramp stamps. I am not a fan of them on the planes (although I think it is a nice design and can be a great thing to be used other places), however when they offer to take you for a ride in a plane with the stamp on it, I seem to not care. Haha

I have never been a fan of the all over dark blue on the Corsair. I don't hate them, just prefer the tri-color ones better.

I wouldn't say that I truly dislike any of the schemes out there, but I am severely fatigued at seeing two things. I am so tired of seeing invasion stripes and seeing the same basic scheme repeated over and over again. I wish that other owners would take a little time and look around at what's already done and what can be found with a little research. I for one, would rather take a bit of time and find something different for my paint scheme, so that it will be different enough that it makes it memorable on it's own, rather than it's just another cookie cutter paint job.

A non-authentic camoflage scheme that I always liked was applied to a Sea Fury back in the early 1970s, the airplane was then owned by the late Ormond Hayden-Bailey and hence the OH-B letters on the fuselage. Wondering though if many think this is warbird blasphemy?

Although admittedly a paint scheme never worn by a Sea Fury...I liked it. And let's face it, "Hyphen-Baillie" had panache. Didn't he 'convince' CP Air or Air Canada that it would be in their best interests if THEY painted his plane for him? And wasn't he the one who sweet talked the US Air Force to transport his plane in a C-5?
