Easy.., if you are cruising around off the coast of Somalia in a boat with more than one AK-47 or Grenade Launcher.., Tango Uniform.
If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck.., then baby.., dead pirate!

Considering how dangerous the situation is of the shores of Somalia, would it make sense to set up convoys? I'm sure it is in everyones best interests (other than for the pirates) to have protection for the ships passing. Perhaps have one or two ships through the waters under the surveillance of some sort of military force.
Maybe a P-3 Orion for aerial cover, a submarine for sneak attack, and some larger warships to escort. A rule could be set up that if you start shooting weapons at ships in that area, that you will become dead meat.
These people are terrorists, and terrorists are killed (with very little questioning) in many different places in the world, but what makes it different in Somalia is that they're on boats... is this really a big difference that prevents us from sinking their ships?
Peace,
David M

I am not sure why the world is treating this situation with such kid gloves.., other than the fact that the Somalia Pirates are still holding close to 600 crewmen as hostages., I imagine this is the overwhelming trick in their back pocket
Why can't these ships just arm themselves with just a few deck mounted .50's? Or one or two paid snipers per boat?

We have some courageous keyboard vigilantes here.
You'll notice we don't have much of a piracy problem off the coast of the USA. Is that because we threw away due process and embraced cruel and unusual punishment? No. It's because we have cops (i.e. navy, USCG, water borne police). The problem is solved when the baddies are caught or know they will be caught. The swift, fun, exotic punishments after they are caught do not make much of a contribution beyond that. Maybe the opposite, as muddy suggests.
Some parts of the world still need a coast guard, that's all.

Well.., this country also has a functioning governing body(somewhat) unlike Somalia.., which is run by mobs and thugs!
This thread was what to do about this issue against the merchant and private vessels while Somalia is still in chaos. If a few of these pirates did not come back at all..,or all toe-tagged instead of waving off of the bridge of a captured tanker.., the expectant result would be quite different. I.E. they would find other ventures to earn cash and turn from pirating.
Like I said.., I am all for due process.. followed by a first class hanging!

The murder of the US citizens earlier this week makes me sick. We need to kick some major butt over there. That area of the world is being held hostage by scum bags in what amounts to row boats. What is wrong with this picture.

I used to know a guy who was somewhat connected to the S.S. Akuna.
Similar concept to the "Q" ships, operating in the Gulf of Siam.
I don't know if Col. Bailey is still around, but he was a tough s.o.b.
If he is still around, and anyone knows him, tell him that Mad Mike passed away in April 2008.
