Wow, I am surprised that any Huckins boats survived!

Going back to something said earlier about PT Boats being cut down in length to meet easier regulations: Where was the length cut from? Was the boat cut in half and a section removed, or what?

They were never assigned to any war zones , instead being assigned to Melville, the Panama Canal zone and Hawaii.

Maybe they ones from Melvile survived because they were surplus in an active private / commercial fishing area?

Usually the back end of the boat was simply cut off of the stern to get to the 65 ft length, and a new transom was built.

Three quick comments:

1. The Mod should split the PT discussion out of the USS Texas thread into its own separate thread.

2. Five PT boats were lost recently (withing the last 10 years) (see wikipedia). PT-308 (Mediterainian vet) a 78' Higgins cut up in mid 2000's just before launch by propety owner building condos because it was an 'eyesore'; PT-659 a 78' Higgins (cut up in 2008, parts sent to New Orleans to support PT-305 resto.); PT-694 a 73' Vosper (McHale's Navy PT-73); PT-695 a 73' Vosper (PT Joe) cut up in 2007; PT-761 a 80' Elco destroyed in storage in 2006 due to a pissing contest.

3. PT-3 a 58' Fisher, still exists (as of late last year) but is in rough shape.

Not a bad idea. There seems to be a lot of interest in the PTs .. but, this thread drifted far off its original subject line in order to get there. Perhaps it could be combined with the new discussion that recently sprang up under the heading of "PT Boat 658?"

I have been close to the Texas many times, but hard to park an 18 wheeler close when you don't know the neighborhood.

Bill, excellent history lesson! You forgot to mention the Mexican ranchers who sided with the Texas settlers and fought Santa Anna...they were known as Texicans, and a fierce loyal lot they were....Too bad the U. S. Gubberment got involved and ended up annexing the territory and eventually making her a state....Sure is interesting thinking what Texas would be like today if it had ended up being a soverign nation!

Seeing how as I hope to fly out there tomorrow, I may have to see if I can budget enough fuel to swing by again. I wonder if I could get another warbird to go out with me before sunset tomorrow...

With WOH going on, it's probably a safe bet you'll have company in the neighborhood with "Sunset" flights around the Bay.

To set the record straight, Texas was never a territory, it was a sovereign nation. There was no annexation, Texas entered the union as an equal state from day one. Texas is the only state in the union that is allowed to fly its flag at the same height as the American flag.
