1. "Alright big mouth that did it"!

2. "You can tell Lt. Dickinson for me he couldn't hit a bull in the butt with a bass fiddle"

#2 would be from T-3......"Tora, Tora, Tora"

also from "Tora" and still so applicable today
" In all my fifty years of public service, I have never seen a document so crowded with infamous falsehoods and distortions, on a scale so huge that I never imagined until today that any government on this planet was capable of uttering them. "

I think the "Bass fiddle" line was from 12 O'Clock High.

The "Fifty years" line was, in fact, from Tora. Was said by Sec. Cordell Hull to Ambs. Nomura and Kurusu.

Mudge the positive

T-3 all right..Bull Halsey after watching a lackluster demonstration of dive bombing. There is a similar scene (don't recall whether it's before or after) in which Yamamato praises his pilots after watching a similar demonstration.

#2 came from Tora x3. Correct. I am pretty sure it was spoofing a real name from Pearl Harbor: Lt. Clarence Dickinson. Who was one of the SBD pilots that flew from Enterprise during the attack. Lt. Dickinson had a long ordeal after bailing out and it is worthy of reading. He really interests me for some reason. Perhaps because of his almost comical but yet sad exploits at Pearl. His gunner was KIA never bailing out of the stricken SBD which ended up crashing. :(

Can anyone get number 1? I will give a small hint...Americans and Canadians.

How about "Devil's Brigade" for #1? I think it was said by Claude Akins just before he got his butt whupped by the Canadian Sgt.
I remember William Holden, Cliff Robertson, Vince Edwards, and Claude Akins being in it. I guess I could look it up.

The movie leaves out the rest of Cordell Hull's speech:
"Scoundrels and pissants!" :finga:

Did Secretary Hull actually make that statement to Nomura and Kurusu, or is it similar to Yamamoto's "sleeping giant" quote (something everybody "knows," but there's no record of him actually saying?) Wiki records Hull as saying it, but it's not necessarily a definitive source.

In the movie, Hull says it to them directly. But...you know Hollywood.

Hollywood also showed P-40s outmaneuvering Zeros in that disaster called "Pearl Harbor" so make up your own mind.

Mudge the suspicious

The P-40 could. As long as the pilot kept his airspeed up above that of the zero.

BTW: Mudge, I remember you not liking the Tora group at airshows. :P

Right. Never could understand the attraction to it. A bunch of modified T-6s flying over and some fuel being set afire on the ground. But...for those of you who like it....

Mudge the grouch
