US aircraft manufacturer Boeing received at least $5.3bn (£3.3bn) in unfair aid from Washington, the World Trade Organization (WTO) has concluded.

The subsidies included money for research and development from the Nasa space agency, a panel of international trade judges has ruled.

Last year the WTO said that Boeing's arch rival Airbus had received illegal aid from European governments.

The two companies have been at war over state aid for almost six years.

The case is one of the most complex ever brought before Geneva-based WTO, which has issued 2,000 pages of rulings.

Both companies claimed that the WTO's latest ruling bolstered their case.

"It's time for Boeing to stop denying or minimising the massive illegal subsidies it gets," said Rainer Ohler, head of public affairs at Airbus.

But Boeing said that the WTO's ruling on the size of its aid, $5.3bn, was dwarfed by the $20bn that Airbus had received.

"This WTO ruling shatters the convenient myth that European governments must illegally subsidise Airbus to counter US government assistance to Boeing," said Michael Luttig, general counsel at Boeing.

Europe had claimed that Boeing had received ten sorts of illegal subsidies worth $19.1bn between 1989 and 2006.

The WTO did not uphold all of the claims.

But it said that some of the subsidies, including the Nasa contracts and some tax breaks, had had a serious impact on Airbus' interests.

"The effect of these subsidies was displacement and impedance of Airbus large civil aircraft from third country markets, significant price suppression and significant lost sales," said the WTO in a statement.

It has recommended that the US withdraw the subsidies.

The European Union's trade commissioner Karel De Gucht said the ruling confirmed Brussels' suspicions.

"This WTO panel report clearly shows that Boeing has received huge subsidies in the past and continues to receive significant subsidies today," he said.

I'm amazed at the attitude of some in the USofA who demand the right to sell military equipment to all parts of the world and at the same time try to close access to foreign companies to compete for big US military contracts. It is like the blame game on China when it is the US that imports the stuff in the first place. It is after all US companies that moved their production to China!!

And here I thought the multiple posts on this thread about how the US has made major buys of foreign equipment or equipment from foreign-based companies might have actually gotten read somewhere along the way. Forgetting the fact that the US Civilian leadership (aka Congress) has passed laws stating that the United States will buy from within unless certain conditions are met, the US has, does, and will continue to go outside of the US to purchase items when it needs to.

Let's see, some of the foreign companies the US has and is buying equipment from -

BAE Systems
Pratt & Whitney Canada
Bombardier
Aerospatiale/EADS
Dassault
Transall
Alenia
General Dynamics Land Systems (Canadian, not US)
Rolls Royce
FNH
Rheinmettal
Chobham
Beretta
Heckler & Koch

Yeah, most of these purchases are made by the US units of these companies, but the point is, they're still foreign-owned at some level but we're trusting the lives of many of our soldiers to their equipment. Every M1 Abrams we have counts on Rheinmettal building us a quality bore. Every C-130 that is flying relies on quality parts and support from Rolls Royce. Every LAV that our Marines ride into conflict every day trust in the great workers at GDLS in Canada to have made an excellent vehicle. Every M240 or M249 in the hands of a soldier, sailor, or Marine, relies that the Belgians who built at least part of their weapon did a good job. More than half of the M-16's and M-4's currently produced are produced by FNH, not by Colt. The workhorse of the US Coast Guard helicopter fleet, the Dolphin, is built by what is now EADS. Not only that, but their foreign-built Dassault HU-25 Guardians are now being replaced by the similarly foreign built EADS/CASA HC-144A "Ocean Sentry".

The US citizen has always demanded that the right weapon be chosen for the right job. The system that was supposed to make sure it happened after the US citizen got tired of it after the C-5 debacle, and when it broke again during CSAR-X and KC-X, the US citizen demanded it get fixed again. It was, and the right verdict has been rendered and even EADS has acknowledged it.
