Warbird Information Exchange

My office is halfway between the Fox Field firebomber base and the Topanga fire that is burning in So Cal. The constant stream of Neptunes, S2-T Trackers and DC-6s has kept me walking to the back door of the shop all day long. How is a warbird lover expected to get any work done in conditions like these????

Snap some pictures the next time you see them flying outside.

My office is on the valley floor at 900 ft MSL and they are crossing over at about 4000' to clear the ridge line behind me, so the photo op is not too good. During last years fire in my valley the big 4 engined bombers were flying at eye level about 200 yards behind the back deck of my house, which is on a hilltop above the Santa Clarita valley. Very exciting .... but I prefer to watch them at airshows, not while protecting my neighhood. I will however have my new Nikon Digital SLR ready if it evers happens again.

I am guilty of running to the door when I hear something cool coming or going over. My wife & I took a week off & went to Panama City Beach FL. a couple weeks ago. Being pretty close to Tyndal AFB & the Naval Support Base, there were lots of military aircraft around. We had an 8th floor facing the beach condo so I could sit on the patio & see helicopters, jets - cool stuff go by. The best one was this cat in a F-15 flying just offshore to the west, low & slow, I was beginning to think this guy was in trouble when he suddenly went in to burner, pulled the nose straight up with an Immelman on the top & reversed course back to the east. Man I was hollering & pointing the people on the beach didn't know whether to watch me or the plane. Thought it might have been Randy Haskin but he was in Reno that week. Guess I'm just eat up with it. My wife thinks I'm crazy. Take a week off to get AWAY from planes, & spend it watching planes. Oh well. Its in my blood can't help it.

Fly Fast Make Noise!

Couple weeks ago we had a bog fire just outside of Vancouver BC and some of the aircraft of interest used in the attack included the Convair CV580, Trackers and the Martin Mars.

I didn't get any photos, but I found this site with some shots of the Mars filling its tanks to fight the fire.

You don't see these aircraft near the city much so it was great to see them in action, specially the Mars.

Don't forget the OV-10 Broncos as well. The're currently directing the Skycrane helicopters against the fire in Burbank.
