Although the average viewer won't think 'warbird' when they see it, there's been a red 450 Stearman in tons of movies and TV shows.

I havent seen Air Force in awhile but you are probably correct. Although I remember P-43's being used as Zero's. More or less stock footage of a fast flying P-43.

You're correct. P-43 models.
And a AT-6 playing an O-47. They mention the O-47 by name...surely a first (and last).
I wastched it a couple of night ago after taking it on TCM, but I think they also used a couple shots of AT-6s as Zeros as well.

But a new answer to the question is....drum rolll...
C-47/DC-3 (that does count as a warbird, doesn't it?)

I think that one was an obscure Yugoslavian type powered by an R1340.

The Spitfire also appeared in " The Spitfire Story" which starred Sir David Niven as Reginald Mitchell.

Maybe I missed it but the Spitfire was also in Pearl Harbour when whats his name went to join the RAF and got shot down

Pearl Harbor is in Daz's list above, as is 'The First of the Few' (known as 'Spitfire' in the US) which did indeed star David Niven (never a 'Sir' though), but not as Mitchell, instead as a fictional character, an RAF pilot and friend of Mitchell.

Hmmm.... Phantom is pretty well known... T-38/F-5/F-20 is used for a lot of stock shots... F-16 "lately" (I'm 53), BUFF... I'd mention the f-14 but I hate Top Gun... and if we go in the other direction.... Jennies and Fokker Triplanes (D-VIIs?)

That should stir things up a bit.
